The parents would have been cruel if they killed the animal. At least this one is going to go to a new home.

As for trusting adults or hating mom. Taking away something the kid likes, be it their pet, or their TV, perhaps this pet meant more than a TV, other kids would care less about their pet but not let go of their TV, would really drive in the consequences for your actions thing. We just don't know.
