Uh oh... WOOD shavings vs Pine shavings...

washxc: That's the same thing I bought, I could see the darker colored cedar in it and didn't want to take a chance. I actually ended up trading with my dad for a bag of pine shavings, (he has a horse) so I didn't have to make a long trip or waste a bag!

Also, DH is building a great big coop for my chickies, We got some 6x6 beams for free and are doing the coop pole barn style, unfortunatley, we just now realized that the beams are cedar... only one beam will be exposed to the chickens, so I plan on painting it to seal it and any oils or fumes... do you guys think this will be ok?

I called TSC today to ask if there is any cedar in the clear bag of wood chips (I don't really see any) and she reported that there aren't and that's why they keep the bags separate. She seemed to know about chicks and bedding and she said that they actually use the same bags of wood chips with their chicks when they arrive.

I use the big white bag! I have been using it since day 1. No problems at all!!! I have 56 7 week old chicks on it. They are all great and getting HUGE! I'm finally going to put them out this week end. Yeah!!!

Mine too, I've used two or three bags for my chicks, they've been on it since they were about 3 days old. There is an aroma, but it's pine not cedar. The chips are a very light color not reddish.

We use them in our nest boxes too and I have noticed no problems at all. I don't remember what it said on the bag, but I think Wood shavings or something like that. TSC also has small bags of finer pine bedding and also aspen. The lady said that the stuff in the white bags was what they used in their chick brooders and their chicks are fine.

I've always used the wood shavings from TSC in my brooders. Never had any problems. The shavings are light colored and have a faint smell- like pine. It may contain a mix of pine and other shavings, but I've never noticed any cedar mixed in.

I bet I have the same bag. They were kept outside at my TSC. I asked the lady if they were pine and she said yes, so chicks have been using it. I can look at the name brand later and report back.

I grabbed 1 of the clear bags in a hurry. But once i read the fine print it said cedar in the mix of woods! Sorry I can't remember the color of the writing. I wanna say blueish green, maybe? It was very small writing. I want to say it was on the back bottom right side. I returned it and got my usual white bag.
P.s. The lil clear bag was $9 and my huge white bag was $4 or $5 and 4 times as big!!!!
God Bless!

I used 2 bags yesterday to lay on my coop floor (8' x 8'), and actually sat and thought "what TYPE of wood are these shavings?" because it did not say what it was anywhere on the bag. My girls were doing well this morning, though. I will keep a close check on them for the next few days!
