Hi Kim

Well done for getting Harry out so much. I'm really impressed.

Reb seems to have recovered from his hiccup on Saturday thanks but it's made me apprehensive again. Weather has turned cold and wet here. Poor Cora was shaking yesterday lunchtime and I had to rug her up for a few hours until the weather dried up. It's not like her to be soft so I guess she must be starting to feel her age. Had a real set back with Zak's jumping training in the arena. He was doing really well on the lunge and then Ian put a little filler under the pole and he hit it hard and frightened himself and now we are having allsorts of antics from him because he doesn't want to look at anything more than a pole on the ground. Going to ride out on him this afternoon and forget jumping practice for today as there is no point in sickening him.

I didn't get my eggs set until last night so I'm a few days behind you. Broodies No. 6 and 7 of the year! I've given Margo, who is my original exchequer leghorn, 6x Welsummer/legbar crosses and her granddaughter who is a little black leghorn cross has got 9 more pekins... mostly from the silver pencilled hen crossed to the lavender cock, so I don't know what colours that will throw up. They are in nests side by side in the loft above the hen house/stable.... their choice of location and although I've given them clean nests dusted with DE etc each in an old drawer, I've decided to leave them up there as they are safe and dry and I have a ladder permanently there for access to collect eggs anyway, so I can easily check on them daily. Both are first time broodies so I will no doubt be overly interfering!
All the other broodies and chicks are doing well and that little pekin that I was concerned about looks to be holding it's own. Both of those pekin broodies are in a little coop together and I was concerned about how they would get on once they both had chicks but apart from the odd slight peck, it seems to be working out ok. One of the youngest ones seems to be a bit cheeky and fancies being a member of the older clan and the broody is quite tolerant of it..... I'm guessing it will be a cockerel, but too early to tell as they are just a week old.

Think that is all my news for now. Great to see so many new members on the thread!

Best wishes

Barbara

Oh Barabara your bound to be apprehensive about Rebel with all the trouble he's had :hugs Pleased to hear it was just a glitch though. Cora is sounding like Harry, if he gets wet he is shaking, I do try to keep at least a thin summer turnout on if it's going to rain but with all the showers we are having and (some I have to say are pretty big) it's been hit and miss with him. Saturday evening was terrible, thunder, lightening and really heavy rain. Backyard was flooded here, right up to the back door ~

How has Zak got on this afternoon? Good ride? I'm sure it will do him the world of good doing something different and hopefully he will put the crashing into the filler to the back of his mind. Always something isn't there! I've been good again today and got out on Harry this morning :D Just me and him as my friend who I've been hacking out with has hit another problem. She works late on a Monday so I do hers for her and I was just tipping my barrow and getting ready to leave when her horse Pickle managed to get her leg in the electric fence :( She set off and it was wrapped around the leg, she was kicking and bucking trying to free herself as the wooden post were being pulled up behind her and the fence was still wrapped around the leg. Was an absolute awful thing to watch and all I could do was run to the field, I really did feel totally helpless. Thank goodness it came off in the end and I eventually managed to catch her. Leg a mess and even worse now than this pic I took straight after ~

It's so swollen and she has obviously done other damage to the leg and not just the skin wound. Can't be stiched because of its location. Rang my friend straight away at work, she's a vet nurse so got straight on the phone to the vet who was out on calls to come and see to her. The poor lass was so upset as she couldn't leave work as she was the only nurse on and was in a bit of :barnie altogether really. Got her sedated and all cleaned up and the actual wound is just flesh and not as deep as first thought. 6 - 8 weeks box rest and she just has to see how things pan out ~

Barbara your broody hens are really going for it!! I'm not sure I would fancy going up the ladder to check them out, heights are not my thing!! How do you go about getting them out? Of the two Pekin cockerels I've had they have been very cocky! The little lavender one out in the shed now is going round bullying and keeping the others check. He's just constantly having a go and asserting his authority! Quite the little 10 men he is :D

Hope you have had a fab ride and all is well.

Kim xx

Hi Kim

Yes we had a good ride thanks. Zak was just happy not to go in the arena and have to face that scary jumping task again.
Poor Pickle! That is really nasty! I know exactly how you must have felt seeing it happening and being unable to do anything. I was like that when Reb hung himself over the gate. You just watch horrified and wait for something to give and hope and pray it is the inanimate object rather than the horse. It is so scary when horses panic like that. Sounds like you and Harry will be hacking out on your own for a while but at least she will recover and she will get the most experienced care possible if her Mam is a veterinary nurse!

I went to put the pekin broodies to bed tonight..... the chicks are quite capable of managing the ramp as I covered it in a bit of carpet offcut.... but their mothers seem very disinclined to take them to bed. The huddle in the back corner where I can't reach them and I get very irate because we have the same routine every night.... with me desperately trying to lever them out of the back corner with a stick and then usually unsuccessfully grab them before they run back..... until I had the bright idea of a ladle!!!! Now I grab the broodies and chuck them upstairs and then ladle up the chicks! You have to see it to really appreciate the craziness of it. The Mottled, Daisy, has definitely lost one of her little chicks to Portia's gang, so it's now 7 and 4 instead of 6 and 5. I snapped a photo of Portia tonight....

And whilst I'm posting photos...... this is Frances and some of her brood

when they were little.

And one of Tasha up on the roost last year with her chicks (excuse the state of the roosts... there isn't an option for a blushing with embarrassment emoticon!)

And one of Tasha, just showing her wonderful quirky self

And since I'm on a roll with downloading photos..... here's one of my 3 youngest beasties..... L-R Rascal, MeMe and Rebel

Can't believe I've managed to embed all those photos!!! Now I must head off to bed! Night night!

Hi @Yorkshirecoop or anybody else that can help...just wanted to pick someones brains.....I have a Silver Pencilled Barred Plymouth Rock (quite a mouthful!) that appears to be beginning to moult. Has anyone heard of this so early in the season? Lots of her feathers all over the place. Not gone broody so not plucking to nest (I don't think), fed on good quality layers pellets, free range all day and generally in fine fettle health wise. She is approx 16-18 months old, we got her last Spring as a 6 month old. I've googled it but can't find much info other than stuff about force moulting which, unless I'm doing something wrong, I am not in the process of doing. Any advice greatly appreciated! Sasha x

Hi Sasha!

Did she have her first adult moult ok? Mites/lice? These can cause them to over preen as the irritation becomes too much. She may be just thinking about being broody at this stage and is getting ready to have a go. Are the feathers being plucked from all over her? Or just the breast and underneath? Are the others having a go at her? They could be pulling them out of her.

@rebrascora

Hi Barabara :D
Burning the midnight oil again I see!

I'm just loving your pics :love Putting faces to names of chickens is fantastic and who could not love Tasha!! I love those cheeks! She makes you want to go up to them and give them a squeeze like grandmas do :barnie

I have all sorts of vision of you tackling chicks with a ladle on your hands and knees :gig Hey if it works no problem with that. Good use of kitchen utensils if you ask me!! Better than been stuck over the cooker using them ;)

So Portia is a chick thief!! I've read quite a bit about hens stealing other hens chicks but I guess that's how it would be in nature if we were not intervening. As long as everyone has a mum it seems ok to me.

Your three beasties look fab too, how do you get them to stand for a good pic? I take loads of Harry and 1 or 2 are only any good!

Hope you have a fab day today and that you have a bit of this sun we have down here right now. Yes that's right, SUN

Hi Everyone,
I'm in Burton on the Wolds. It's great reading all your stories.
I have 4 leghorns hatched at a local primary school. They're 13 weeks old now. How can I tell if they're boys or girls?

Hi :welcome & the thread!

Can you post pics of them? This is the easiest way as @jemini212 has said.
Here are some threads for you to check out on them ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=Leghorns#

You could also pop by the what breed gender section of the forum ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

Good luck and :fl you don't have too many boys.

Hiyah, thanks for replying...she hasn't moulted with me yet even though I've had her since last year so I can't comment on previous moults. She is quite high ranking so I'm pretty certain not being bullied. They seem to be coming off gradually all over and when she shakes....boy do those feathers fly off! I'll do a check for lice and mites but they've all been having Ivermectin drops on a fortnightly basis for 2 months as i did have a Silkie with lice. We have got chicks so whether her hearing them is making her broody I don't know but she's not making any attempt to "set" down, in fact I'm not sure she is even laying. I'll try grab a photo when i get 2 minutes!

In fact here are a couple:
