Hi Kim
Well done for getting Harry out so much. I'm really impressed.
Reb seems to have recovered from his hiccup on Saturday thanks but it's made me apprehensive again. Weather has turned cold and wet here. Poor Cora was shaking yesterday lunchtime and I had to rug her up for a few hours until the weather dried up. It's not like her to be soft so I guess she must be starting to feel her age. Had a real set back with Zak's jumping training in the arena. He was doing really well on the lunge and then Ian put a little filler under the pole and he hit it hard and frightened himself and now we are having allsorts of antics from him because he doesn't want to look at anything more than a pole on the ground. Going to ride out on him this afternoon and forget jumping practice for today as there is no point in sickening him.
I didn't get my eggs set until last night so I'm a few days behind you. Broodies No. 6 and 7 of the year! I've given Margo, who is my original exchequer leghorn, 6x Welsummer/legbar crosses and her granddaughter who is a little black leghorn cross has got 9 more pekins... mostly from the silver pencilled hen crossed to the lavender cock, so I don't know what colours that will throw up. They are in nests side by side in the loft above the hen house/stable.... their choice of location and although I've given them clean nests dusted with DE etc each in an old drawer, I've decided to leave them up there as they are safe and dry and I have a ladder permanently there for access to collect eggs anyway, so I can easily check on them daily. Both are first time broodies so I will no doubt be overly interfering!
All the other broodies and chicks are doing well and that little pekin that I was concerned about looks to be holding it's own. Both of those pekin broodies are in a little coop together and I was concerned about how they would get on once they both had chicks but apart from the odd slight peck, it seems to be working out ok. One of the youngest ones seems to be a bit cheeky and fancies being a member of the older clan and the broody is quite tolerant of it..... I'm guessing it will be a cockerel, but too early to tell as they are just a week old.
Think that is all my news for now. Great to see so many new members on the thread!
Best wishes
Barbara
