Hi Barabara :D

Oh goodness me what a time you have been having with Frances and the little Pekin dying like that :hugs How is Frances now? All good I hope :fl What an ordeal having to go find her like that and she was so lucky to not have not been seriously injured. Phew!

Any action for your eggs yet? Hatch all done here by the end of Friday, i moved the last three into the brooder before heading off to bed that night. Of the 16 that made it to lockdown 14 hatched. 10 Pekin, mainly lemon and a couple of lavender and 4 Wyandottes. I'm afraid the last 2 Wyandottes died in the shell after they had pipped. One had pipped through a blood vessel and bled out and the other I have no clue about :idunno I opened the shell and it was fully formed, all yolk and blood vessels absorbed but just didn't start zipping. Overall a good hatch batting the 2 deaths and everyone seems to be doing well. Got them in the house of a few days before I move them out to the shed.

Have you been out riding? Still getting out with Ian? How's Zak doing now? Have they ironed their difference's out? It sure sounds like a battle of the Will's with those two! Catch 22 isn't it when you get frustrated and the horse won't do what you ask.

Been out on Harry today and yesterday :D Had a right fool of a van this morning :( As I was coming to a junction I stuck my arm out to the right to indicate, the van was well behind me and we had more than enough time to make the junction before it got to needing to overtake us. This junction is on a bit of corner so you need to move out to check around it, I moved out to look and the van came screaming past us over taking on the corner!! I'm sure he's sped up when he saw us and for what reason I don't know! He was certainly over the 30 limit. Other than that all good and Harry was well behaved and we had some pretty big tractors this morning.

Hope all is going well for you there and that you are enjoying this nice weather :D

Hi and welcome to the thread :frow
Neat pics and great you have some one close by in Rudies roost :D
I believe Barbara lets hers raise them in the flock. I've only had one broody and I kept her separate untill the chicks were about 6 weeks I think. Unfortunately 3/4 chicks were cockerels so they had the chop and I let the hen and the remaining chick out in the garden with the others. There were a few caffuffles but nothing really bad. They sorted a new pecking order out and everyone settled in the end.
Can you put a pen on the grass for the hen and chicks? Maybe next to the others so they get used to each other before being fully introduced?

Hi @Yorkshire Coop
They've been raised in a separate coop in full view of the other chickens since they hatched about three weeks ago, so the rest of them know they are around. I decided to bite he bullet and let them out this afternoon. Everything seems to be ok so far, one of the other hens had a slight peck of one of the chicks, but nothing too nasty, and momma seemed to want to introduce them to her friends so it went quite well! She has taken them back to her coop now so I am just letting her go at her own pace :)

I've got my 3 week olds out with their mommies but i do pen them off from the main flock until around 8 weeks. This worked well last year for me and the integration of the youngsters as they matured went really well...

Please excuse the mess in the garden...we're in the middle of re-fencing etc due to moaning neighbours (see earlier ranting posts!). The mom's seem to do an amazing job with them. Good luck :)

Now you see looking at your chicks they look a hell of a lot more developed and feathered than mine do...mine look very scrawny :S I'm worried they're not getting the right nutrition penned off in their little broody area I have set up. There's no grass growing in there anymore for them to scratch around in and eat...its just hardcore and dirt :/ they seem OK being it and about, just wish they were a bit bigger than they are. I have five 2 week old chicks in a broody box inside and they are so much further on than my outdoor chicks...is this just because hey have constant food?

@Rudies Roost
Btw I am very jealous of your outdoor set up...its not untidy at all! Looks perfect for chucks ^_^ wish I had the space to be able to separate mine like that

Just realised what a dreadful pic that was that I posted! Here's a (slightly) better one:

My chicks only really get to go out when we are about, they are stuck in a large dog crate in the coop with their chick crumb....I guess they all develop at different rates but as long as they're getting the correct food then they should all mature well. The chicks in the picture are Silkies and Thuringian's so not the biggest of breeds but they are growing fast now! Don't worry....your chicks will suddenly surprise you and grow right up ;)

I love it! So much room!
I hope so...momma is trying her best to show them how to scratch and what to eat, and there is always plenty of chick crumb...although I suppose they are still only very little and so will hopefully shoot up soon!
