Sorry to hear about your losses Your leghorn sounds like she had a very peaceful passing, I know it's horrible them dying but I would much rather it be like that rather than long and drawn out.
Great going on the self restraint at the game fair! Now for the leghorn replacement, as you were so good last time you deserve at least 3 more now LOL.

How's your daughter settling in at secondary school? Hope she is enjoying it but I bet it's quiet for you now during the day. It sure is here now Charlie is back at school. He's decided he might want to go in the army when he leaves school, not sure how I feel about that one :/

Omg....not sure about the army....an admirable choice of career but crikey....scary for a parent. My daughter has settled in really well in secondary school thank you. She was awarded Form Captain yesterday (such a swat!!!) So she (and I ) are well chuffed!!!

Pretty fed up of all the losses this year, guess that's what happens as they start ageing but my heart cant take it much more!!! Love my birds and I don't like them going over the rainbow....I'd rather they stayed with me ...hate this part of owning pets xx

How long should a hen live normally? It is sad when they die, but could you have done anything more?

My rescue hens seem to be doing ok for now, I too am splashing DE Powder around like its confetti-doesn't seem to bother any of the chickens, and I hope it keeps the mites off them.

They do go to sleep in the day... I've seen them with their head under a wing on the middle of the lawn. This happens nearly every day. Could it be because the rooster wakes them up (and me) at 3am? Not sure if anyone can sleep through his racket.

How does anyone work out which egg came from which hen...?
Should I be worried about the one that produced this specimen?

Also wanted to share this picture as when I got her she was pretty much bald, and now look at the change, and the new feathers growing back so quickly.

Mine like to have an afternoon nap too especially when the weather is nice. Will have to pass about the roo waking them as mine still nap and I'm sure my roo does not start at 3am. Then again he's a bit of a girls blouse and still young. The hens beat him up and are always asserting authority over him. I'm hoping he's going to grow up soon.

I have mainly polish so I can't be sure who lays what but I know my white crested blacks lay the largest eggs. You could watch who goes in the box then check the egg after. If the funky egg above is not an everyday egg I would not be worried. Hens often have a blip now and again. Here is a good read ~

I know just how you feel with aged animals, it sure is the downside to pets.

After several years of battling a huge infestation of red mite in my coop, and trying almost every anti-mite powder/spray product on the market, I switched from wooden coops to plastic coops from Solway Recycling. I have had my 3 coops for about a year now and I have had zero trace of any red mites! They are really easy to clean- you can just hose them down and need zero maintenance. I managed to get my coops quite cheap second hand/ unused from eBay at between £80- £150 instead of getting them direct from Solway.

A great idea. I'd love to replace my coop but cost would be too much for me. I inherited my large coop when we moved in, it's been purpose built for poultry so other than the fact it's wooden...it's perfect. I do find the DE keeps on top of them along with Ivermectin so as long as I'm strict about applying regularly, I can keep red mite to a minimum.
