Hello everyone!!
Long time no speak!!
I am very sorry for my lack of communication these last few months...I have been extremely busy getting settled into my new job, taking exams and then starting my second year of my MSc! Plus, I have been rearing 4 beautiful Welsh Harlequins who have turned out to be the most gorgeous ducks I have ever set eyes on! I love them so much, and they were so comical in the snow this morning, shuffling around trying to understand what had happened whilst they slept! They were not amused to find their water had turned to slush though, but it still didn't stop them from jumping on in there.
I have come seeking advice once more for my poor special little cockerel Dave. Unfortunately he has never fully recovered from his last bout of wry neck, and I don't think he ever will. He has been suffering with this for about 3 months now, and I have been giving him absolutely everything I can think of and have researched that is supposedly good to treat wry neck, but he seems to have declined over the last few days. I'm giving him vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, probiotics, even aspirin, and he perked up quite a bit last week, but this week he hasn't taken to it as much as seems to be getting worse. My dad came home this afternoon to find him with his head as far between his legs as possible, covered in mud and slush and absolutely sodden. He dried him off for me and put him to bed, but I am worried that this cold weather may mean the end for Dave
He is still living the batchelor lifestyle in his own coop and run so as not to get too stressed out by the other birds, so I am worried with him being on his own that he may get too cold one night and that'll be the end of him :/ does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could keep him warm on his own without any heating? We feed all our chickens corn in the evening so that they can produce heat during the night, so at least he has that, and I've stuffed as much straw in with him as I think necessary, what else can I do? I don't want to lose him now after all the effort I have put in to keeping him alive, he's become one of the families most loved pets!
Any ideas are always greatly appreciated! I hope you all managed in the snow (if you had any) and your flock weren't as confused as mine!
How can we help?![]()
You have snow already!it only ever rains here
Sorry about Dave... Maybe try giving him lots of comfy straw and possibly putting a blanket/cover over his coop to keep the heat in? (making sure that he still has adequate ventilation)
I'd love to see some pics of your Welshies....![]()

And these are four of my little beauties today! They grow up so fast! I just love the colours on them now, they're so smart and gorgeous!
The fifth one unfortunately drowned when he was two weeks old. He had wasn't a very well little duckling to start off with, but I hand fed him and coddled him every day, he was definitely the runt and I'm still not 100% sure he was even a Welsh Harlequins, as he came from a white egg whereas the others all came from blue eggs...but he drowned when he was two weeks oldbless his little cotton socks, I miss him every day. This was little Pekin:
