UK Member Please Say HI

Peas are my least favourite veg ha ha.  My chickens are spinach and tomato freaks so that's my goal.  Am lso going to try sweetcorn.

Have you tried them straight out of the pod? They are a sweet delicious healthy snack :drool
Good luck with crop this year!

Me and the lady up the road are letting them out but ensuring there food is unable to be touched by wildlife and their water and also like I said their pond has also been emptied. They have no treats outside so as not to encourage wild birds but they can not stay in its not big enough if it becomes serious is close to me I will take desperate measures is ducks in side the house chickens locked in coop

For me if its affecting their welfare they should be able to come out. Whilst doing my round delivery I have seen lots of birds still out and not in runs.

I am seriously wondering whether it's possible to install a chicken flap... they keep trying to dive out of the door every time I go in to check/feed/unfreeze the water. I've even let some in the house this week! If I let them out in the garden, I'd have to remove all the puddles... mine like drinking out of puddles no matter how much clean water they have - particularly from one pot that contains camomile?!

Our new house is next to a river and can flood... the new chicken HQ may need to float since chickens seem to get wet and sink :/

Wet chickens and wet poop sure does stink :sick

Yes what is it with chicken's and dirty puddle water?????

Mine drink dirty water too :idunno

Hey everyone I've only just joined byc, I'm from the U.K and I saw this thread so thought I'd join some of those chicken pics are beutifull

Hi :welcome and the thread! Enjoy your time here :highfive:

Hi Kim

Unfortunately the weather was not unlike yours this afternoon and I got rained off before I even started. Hopefully tomorrow will be better but I must restart the cockerel processing as the lads in the bachelor pad are now starting to fight as well as the girls. Argh! I've ordered the tie down stakes for the poly tunnel this afternoon but they are not due to arrive till next Wed and winds are forecast for Tue, so I may just assemble the steel structure and wait for the stakes to arrive before I put the cover on.

By the way, I'm with you on peas....love picking and eating them raw.... naughty you helping yourself from the fields! I've grown them a few times, with mixed success. The year I had a good crop the squirrels came and ate most of them. Hopefully the cats will prevent that from happening again although once the lock down is over, the cats probably won't be allowed back in the garden by the Marans and they will scratch up and eat whatever I sow. I really need to either move them up to the yard or make a completely bird tight run for them as they are determined not to stay in their pen. For big birds they can fly incredibly well, but they will also dig their way out if they have to! It would be nice to be able to reclaim my garden or my veg patch at least!

Hope you have a great weekend too.

Regards

Barbara

Hi there, Im Claire. I live in Lancs at the moment - but moving to the Lakes soon. I have 13 chickens, including 2 OEGs, 1 wyandotte, 3 leghorns, 5 Pekins and 2 Pekin cockrels. They vary in tameness (how do you tame leghorns?!)
Hi Claire and welcome to this thread

I like wyandotte chickens, what colour is yours?
As regards Leghorns, they are quite tameless but they make a lot of eggs too!

Hi tanithcrane and welcome to the thread and BYC as a whole!

What part of the UK are you in? It helps if you include that info on your profile page so that it is displayed each time you as it can be relevant to any advice that is sought or given.

What type of poultry do you have? Feel free to post some photos of them ....we love photos! Do you have any other animals?

How are you coping with the bird flu lock down? I ordered a poly tunnel yesterday lunchtime to give my girls more space and amazingly it's just been delivered, so that's my job for this afternoon sorted! Can't ask for better service than that and it was even free P&P!

Anyway, must go as I have lots to do but look forward to hearing more from you soon.

Regards

Barbara

Hey Barbara
I'm from Bognor Regis in West Sussex
I tried to enter my details but had some difficulty
I have two chickens and two ducks 1 Peking female and 1 Orpington drake my two hens are hybrids they are a grey colour
I also have a cat and two dogs and they all get along really well
I have been keeping an eye on my birds and they been in there coop , is it affecting West Sussex and can seagulls carry it over no other birds come into contact with them
The other day my Peking was attacked by a fox I've had to keep her indoors till she's better but she laid a egg the day after it happened but hasn't laid any since which is worrying and I want to clean her neck where the stitches are but not sure what to use
The poly tunnel sounds really good
Do you have to keep them in there coop
Are they saying it's best for poultry not to roam we don't have a big garden and it's mostly shingle I have flower beds that have herbs in them the chickens love the lemon sage lol
Kind regards Tanith

Hi again Tanith....what an unusual name!

It is normal for poultry to stop laying after an attack or any stress, so don't worry too much about her not laying. The egg that she laid after the attack was already on the production line so to speak and needed to come out, but her body will stop releasing any more eggs until she has recovered from the trauma. Foxes are a pain. You are lucky that you didn't lose her.

The restrictions apply to the whole country and you are supposed to prevent direct contact with wild birds and access to their feed and water....ideally by keeping your birds indoors. I have over 70 in different pens and most free range, so they are pretty cheesed off at being kept in. The poly tunnel idea came from someone else and since the restrictions have been extended to the end of Feb. I decided I needed to splash out and get one to give some of them more space. It is starting to get worrying as there are more outbreaks being reported and it appears to be spreading further north. I would imagine that sea gulls can also get it and carry it, so I would take whatever precautions you can. Many are using tarpaulin to cover their run which is a cheaper option.

They are lovely pictures of your animals. You are so lucky that your dogs don't bother the poultry. Did you have to train them? Shame they didn't see off the fox though! Your chicken looks like a speckledy although it's not a clear photo of her. Is she laying yet?

Yes ! It's a Celtic name lol it's a ancient Scottish one that means the goddess of the moon and stars and love lol I always get embarrassed when I tell people that lol

Ahh that's ok I was getting worried she may have broken a egg, she has improved so much and your right I did almost lose her didn't think she would pull through, I had to spend almost 800 £ but I would rather pay for her to be alive then not have paid that and her to have died.
I love her lol she's such a funny duck and although the dogs get along well with her she will soon give them a nip if they get to close she has a strong bite lol

Ok , gosh I didn't know that I really should watch the news , we are more south but I'm going to keep them under lock and key , it's really worrying especially if you got loads just hope it all blows over , oh bless you and your chickens hope there all ok

Yeah the ducks grew up with the chickens and the dogs were fine I was worried at first but my collie herds them round the garden lol
The dogs were inside when it happened I blame myself I wasn't careful enough

I've learnt my lesson now
Ahh really I wasn't sure what breed they were , yeah they been laying for a while now , what breed are yours
Thankyou for all your help
Kind regards
Tanith
