UK Member Please Say HI

I was surprised to see her alive this morning, but she looked weak. I am working from home today, so thought I'd be able to look after her.
Sadly after taking a work call she has just died.

@timon

So sorry to hear about your girl. If you are able to do it, it might be worth opening her up and taking a look at her mouth, trachea and lungs particularly. Take photos of anything that looks odd. There is a thread on necropsies where we share photos and discuss possible causes of death....I'll post a link to it when I can dig it out.

My diagnosis would be possible aspergillosis, which is a mould/fungal infection or gape worm. The former can be picked up from foraging in mouldy compost/wood chips etc....There is a thread here on BYC by someone who used a pile of damp woodchips in his run and lost half his flock to aspergillosis, so worth looking around and removing anything that may be the source for that. Obviously if you find gape worms in her trachea, then it would be wise to worm the rest of your flock for them, so it can be beneficial both to your own knowledge and also the rest of your flock to diagnose her, even though she has died.

Regards

Barbara

Edited to add a link to the thread mentioned above

; it's hard when they are ill like that.  It's happened to us and we felt very helpless.  Big hugs

Thankyou all for your thoughts. It is tough, but I realise it's a part of life.
I'm glad she had nearly a year feeling grass under her feet before she passed.

Trust it to be frosty and cold at nights the week I'm introducing my quail to living outside!! They spent Sunday night in there and loved it but it's got to bitter out and seeing as they are only 5 weeks I can't help but worry. Think the new babies are annoying them though

It sure is tough when we lose them :(
You gave her a second chance and I'm sure she appreciated it very much.

If they are fully feathered they should be fine.
But it was a bit parky out this morning brrrrr....

I moved my chicks out to the shed last week but couldn't help worrying about them the last couple of nights. But when I checked on them they were toasty under the lamp :cool:

Goslings hatched this morning so I did need the chicks out of the guinea cage to move the goslings in so all in all the plan has gone ok :D
