@MrsBrodzig

Hi and welcome to the forum and this thread.

I know nothing about quail. Do you keep them for eggs, meat or pets?
There are plenty of other quail folk here though.

Can I suggest that you might like to add your location to your profile page, so that people can see at a glance each time you post, where in the world you are. It saves people having to ask when it is relevant and you having to keep repeating yourself. With this being an international forum, location can be particularly relevant regarding climate, seasons, products that are available in different countries and breed standards to name but a few variances. It also helps people to find other people in their local area for networking and maybe even practical support when needed. There is no requirement to provide the information, but I can see no drawback and some benefits in giving a nearest town or city and country.

Best wishes

Barbara

Yeah, I love the idea of Ducks & Geese but with Great Dane sized poo I will have to pass.
Yes forecast said rain would start at 3pm today, so I had my day planned out.
11.30 the heavens opened, so never mind :confused:

I've given up making plans for the moment with the weather :(

I agree with the poo part I have to go out everyday and clean up after them :sick but the personality of these guys make up for it! They're nearly 8 weeks on Tuesday so more growing to do! The weather has been crappy the chickens aren't impressed especially if their hair is a mess :lau they are loving the attention though as I bring them in with me

My other half draws the line at having them in house unless they are sick!

Hi. I'm from Essex. New to chickens but want fresh eggs. I have 2 brown ones which I consider the normal chickens and I have a little white bantum. I rescued them all and they are lovely. I recently rescued a chick that was being bullied by bigger birds but since joining this group I've found out he's a cockerel so he's got to go I'm afraid. Ive contacted my local poultry provider and asked if they can take him.
Hazel.

oh will do!

And I have only owned my own quail for 3 days but to be honest I have more experience with chickens and birds of prey.

we are aiming to keep for eggs and meat. but my first four are enjoying a pet life style haha.

Hi Kim

Lovely to hear from you.

Not ridden out since last Thurs when my sister nearly lost Rascal in a peat bog! We were trying out a bridleway we had never ridden before. It started out very wide and inviting then through a wicket gate into a farmers field, then another wicket gate into a little copse. The surface was green and grassy with a few fallen logs lying about and the ground a little soft but not muddy. 20 feet from the gate Rascal's front end disappeared quickly followed by his back end and he was literally up to his belly and floundering. Jo stepped off and he eventually managed to haul himself onto some slightly more solid ground. We didn't dare go any further in case it happened again and finding a way around it was challenging as we could walk on the surface without even getting wet or muddy boots, but the horse's weight was just causing them to drop through the grassy surface and get sucked into the peat below..... it was scary! I've sent an email to the appropriate person at the council regarding it because it needs a closure until it can be made safe. We rode 8 miles and that was the only bit of wet ground we encountered and it was before the rain arrived so goodness knows what it will be like now but at least anyone else approaching it should see the great marks Rascal left in it and have some warning before they get into it. Thankfully he was uninjured and probably less shaken than we were but I'm not sure if we would have been so lucky if it had been Rebel or MeMe as they would undoubtedly have panicked more, which is always dangerous in those situations. Needless to say, we will be sticking to routes we know in the future!
Having a bad time with Foxes again. I've lost quite a few in the last few days including my broody and her chick. The foxes in the area are obviously on the increase, but so many people in he village feed them, it's hardly surprising. I could do with borrowing your Charlie! Our wedding job with the horses went well last weekend but I was so relieved when it was over. Too much work and stress for my liking..... will be happy sticking to jogging around the roads for our own pleasure for the rest of the season. Zak is constantly getting into trouble and has a new gash or bite mark nearly every day from getting caught on the fence or winding Ernie and Archie up. He is such a tinker!

Think that is all my news. Hoping that our next ride out is less traumatic!

How are things with you? Have you finished hatching for the year? Hope you are not working too hard.

Best wishes

Barbara

@MrsBrodzig
I was a little worried I might have offended you by suggesting keeping them for meat. Some people can be a bit sensitive :oops:
If they aren't named after the Mario Bros I wouldn't have a clue.... how well does that date me!!!

How do they compare to chickens? Are they more wild or quite friendly? Do they lay as well as hens? Keeping birds of prey sounds interesting.

@rebrascora
Oh it doesn't offend at all I enjoy the whole process I would rather eat things I know who have had a happy and healthy life.

They are nicer to handle then chickens in regards it only takes one hand. and they can be great layers once on there way. they start producing eggs around the 6 to 8 week of age point. and can produce more then 200 eggs a year per bird. they can be a little more feistier then chicken or that's just my hens haha.

and don't worry it doesn't age you to much ;) I think I only named them cause it was something to help me learn to identify them.

and Yes I love my birds of prey way easier to keep then poultry I can happily confirm that.

I haven't had them to long and I'm still learning about quails myself.

I have four Coturnix! all named after video game characters haha hoping to hatch and get more further on

I have had mine since last November they are pets that lay eggs which are sooo yummy and I love my daily egg treasure hunt ! X :)
I'm hoping to incubate some of my own eggs next year probably but I have learnt so much from this forum ! X mine are named after herbs I did have 7 but unfortunately 2 of my girls got killed by a neighbours cat but since I reinforced the run had no problems since so I have 4 girls and an accidental boy ! X
