UK Member Please Say HI

Reposting from the Say Hello thread as I was told this UK thread may be the place for me...

Hello and greetings all. I have been lurking the site for quite some time but finally decided to become a member as I am seeking some personal advice and BYC seems to be THE place for all things chicken. I moved to Northern Ireland from California about a year ago and purchased 4 chickens about 6 months ago. I lost one bird early on to what I believe was Coryza. Culling her was an early and very harsh lesson as she had become my favorite of the four. Unfortunatly I had not done enough research on checking the birds before I purchased them from a local farmer and I am almost certain that the birds were sick when they were sold to me. One has a wonky toe as well. Hindsight is 20/20. Lesson learned. I obtained the birds for eggs but they have since become as much pet as egg producers. They are named after The Golden Girls. Sophia was a Blue Maran, Dorthy is a Barnvelder, Rose is a Wyandotte and Blanche is a Black Maran. I have learned a lot already thanks to BYC and other internet resources and books that I have bought but it is only a drop in the bucket as I seem to be learning new things about them daily. Greetings all. I look forward to becoming a more active member of the site.

Hello! :frowSorry you lost your favourite hen. Our birds are pets really as well, although hopeful that we'll get a few bonus eggs sometime next year :pop Welcome to the UK thread :p

Welcome to the thread :frow Sorry to hear you lost one so early on. It's always hard making that decision. Lovely breeds you have there, good luck with them in the future.

Hi I live in Holmfirth, Last of The Summer Wine country in West Yorkshire. I recently rescued 3 Chickens, a Plymouth Rock roo and two Perkins which, have also turned out to be Roos

Hi & welcome to the thread from East Yorkshire :frow
Gosh that is bad luck on your rescues all being boys, do you think that maybe why they needed rescuing? I'm afraid the boys are often unwanted and are hard to rehome. Will you get some hens too?

Wow feels like ages since I've been on here! My little gang are doing fine although my ducks have matured now so they are all frisky little buggers :lau I've ordered 4 new hens 2 being ex batts, 1 leghorn and 1 blue ranger. Hopefully I'll stop then lol. Currently getting ready for winter I've penned mine off just need to get netting for the roof! Hope you guys and your birds are well :D

@chicknovice123, @Warriorgal, @Yorkshire Coop.
Thank you all!
I breed Rhode Island Red chickens and I currently have Barred Rocks in the incubator.
I also live on a farm with sheep, ducks, dogs and many cats!

Great to hear things are going well for you :D

Hi Again. A few thoughts have crossed my mind as I am still pretty new with chickens and im learning `en route` as it were.
Chick grit, people say they dont need chick grit until they try other foods apart from chick crumbs, some people say that their chick grit is the size of sand but the grit i bought is about the size of the chick crumbs itself. Now even though im just feeding them chick crumbs, they are also tasting the sawdust, so what I did was sieve some of the chick grit out, until a bit is like sand, and put it on a small yoghurt style lid in their box by their food for them to dabble with that, just in case they have sawdust in their `gizzard` to help break it down.
Other thoughts I have had is, what do people do with the mess that gets cleaned out from the coop,(not that i have a coop yet), do people put the mess in a compost bin? Im thinking I might need to get a compost bin too ?

Hi, yes they were most definitely 'dumped' on purpose! I was following the post on our local lost and found page and when no one would home them they were going for the chop, I panicked and went to collect themAt this point I thought they were two hens and the Plymouth roo. I had to spend all day building a coop so they'd be safe overnight. My neighbors already think I'm crackers so this just cemented it!
It took about a week for the little Perkins to start crowing, and then the penny dropped Their welfare was my main concern plus I'm allergic to eggs so I'm really not too bothered.
They have found their natural order and live nicely together, free ranging throughout the day but tucked up safe at night.
I am totally in love with them, I haven't had chucks since I was a child. I would love for them to have some lady friends but read that whilst all Roos will live ok together, unless they have 8-12 hens each they will fight. I'd welcome opinions on this.
