UK Member Please Say HI

Thank you! So for now during the summer I should just leave the grass? And nearer the winter would I just put straw/chippings on top? And enclose the open side. I haven’t really got anywhere they can go on concrete x
I wish I had a huge run like that it looks awesome!
Yes Just leave the grass there, they will like it. My run has got bigger and bigger as they are a spoilt lot lol.

Hi other UK members I've just found this thread! I live in Beckley near Rye in East Sussex and recently got my first two chickens. In the month that I have had them I've learned how to deal with rats, flooded runs and now sadly the loss of one hen to the dogs... Getting a new hen tomorrow so I will be learning about introducing birds to each other, it's been a sharp learning curve!

Hi. Nice to see you here. You've definitely not had a good start with your hens. Thats a near vertical learning curve! Hopefully things will start looking up for you now. I guess you will now have your run and coop rat proofed or are you using bait? A friend of mine recently lost 27 hens and ducks to a dog. He was devastated and was going to throw the towel in but he's since put up better fencing and gates. So hopefully they'll be alot more protected now. I don't think you should have too many problems introducing 1 hen to 1 hen. You should maybe keep them separate for a while to see each other but not come into contact and too observe your new hen for illnesses. What chickens are you getting?

Thank you!!
3 Pekin Bantams, we’re keeping them in the garden and I read they’re not as destructive as larger breeds (I hope that’s true or hubby won’t be pleased hahaha ).
I’m sure I’ll be a frequent visitor here with many frantic questions
Never met a chicken that couldn't decimate a garden in under 60 seconds....welcome! :frow

Well, looks like I've been gone for ages - congratulations on all the hatches, sorry for losses and welcome to new members!
Keeping busy here - my Breda chicks arrived beginning of May - all still alive and looking good.
Lost a couple of older ladies - they were only 4yrs tho'. My real old ladies (8yrs) are hanging in there enjoying retirement.
Someone mentioned broodies? I currently have 6 broodies - 2 have hatched single chicks so far. I don't mind them being broody right now we have an egg mountain....
