Good evening all!
I hope everyone had a merry Christmas and a happy new year!
I have some very sad news to start the year off with though. Unfortunately, I have had to have Dave and his brother put down this weekend. I took them to the vet after Dave's brother was attacked by the other chickens, they nearly took his eye out! I asked whether either of them would get any better, but he said that it appears to be genetic, so would have to live with it for the rest of their lives. He said I couldn't have don't any more for them, and everything I had done so far was right, but I just don't have the time to spend with them any more with working full time now. So me and Dave had one final cuddle (he wouldn't leave me the entire time we were at the vet!) and then I said goodbye.
Things have been very strange these last three days, trying to get used to not having to go into the shed to feed him, making him his vitamins every morning and having a quick cuddle before work. I just hope I never have to make that decision again, I like to think I did the right thing by him.
Thank you all for your support with him in the past, if it weren't for you I wouldn't have been able to spend the time I have with him, and he would have probably been gone a lot sooner.

To be fair he suggested going back to giving them baths once we had to take the paddling pool away from them because of the bird flu! They get so excited that we just have to keep it up now. They spend about 1 hour preening afterwards too! They love being clean! #spoilt
He thought id maybe taken it a step too far when I brought them in to open their Xmas prezzies with us! (Wrapped up, chopped tomatoes) He's probably right...

Oh I'm so sorry about Dave and his brother :hugs It really is hard to make that decision but you really did everything that you could. I know you did the right thing and they are now at peace. I hope with time you can remember all the good times you had together :hugs

This plastic sheeting from BnQ is a god send! We've used one roll that was really cheap for covering their pen, covering the garage floor and our floor in the extension so they can come in for a run around and not ruin the carpet. I'd highly recommend! There's still loads left too! I might go crazy and carpet the whole house so they can free range and live along side us!!

Only joking... Only been married 5 months and reckon that could result in an early divorce

Love the pics :D

Hiyah all! It's been a while since I've been on the thread....notifications not coming through as usual. I have been a lucky girly and have been in Switzerland for 2 weeks (went just after Xmas). Missed my chucks & ducks terribly but they were well cared for by my lovely neighbour (she also has chickens and I look after hers when she is away, its a good arrangement we have).

Ooops....didn't know about the extended restrictions. Mine have been happily free ranging since the 6th January. They're not in too bad a predicament on lockdown as they were locked in a huge pen (20m long x 8m wide) which is attached to their coop with fine grade netting all over it. Also, their food is in a treadle feeder which the wild birds can't access anyway. Only change i really made was to put the water in the coop...much to my ducks delight....little b's have been making a right mess! :somad

Well, guess I must lock them back in there, they will not be amused. Big freezes due from Thursday. Frozen hosepipes are the bain of my life! It drives me mad dragging jug fulls of water to fill the duck pond and waterers. :barnie

@Yorkshirecoop and @rebrascora I hope you are now both revovered from your holiday illnesses? Did you get out on the hunt in the end? V. jealous if you did-I do miss those Boxing Day meets :(

Belated Happy New Year all and welcome to all the new thread subscribers.

Lucky you! I hope you enjoyed Switzerland :)

Thank you all for the good wishes and support! I am starting to feel a bit better about it all, have been very fed up the last few days.
I am starting to think about cracking out the incubator again and trying to hatch some more. Last years hatchlings have started laying and they're such small eggs it's adorable! The one cockerel left out of my Scots Grey hatchlings has finally started crowing, but he scares himself (and the rest of the flock) silly when he does it! He flaps his wings and almost looks like he's having some sort of fit, though I'm sure he will come to terms with his new found voice soon enough. Bruce, who is the father of the rest of last years chicks, doesn't seem to happy with another cockerel around, but he isn't beating him up either, so at least that's a good thing. I am now left with the decision whether to keep Bruce and get rid of the other cockerel, or keep the little one and get rid of Bruce. I can't keep two around, I'll have far too many chicks!
