Thank you so much for your advises and replies regarding Joffrey (my daughter named him) I have now emailed someone who has some newly hatched bantams for sale. I am hoping I will have some luck there so I can bring a few back to keep Joffrey company. I shall keep you updated.

Patience! They will get the hang of it eventually. I have mixed ages in my flock, the 'old ladies' are in bed well before the youngsters so I have to encourage the younger birds in also. They are getting better - now to cure them of sleeping in the nest boxes.....

Thanks Haha yes I've blocked off the nesting boxes for the time being to try and avoid that problem

You could try training them with treats. Start by giving them dried meal worms and shake the packet so they associate the sound with the treat. Only do it on an evening towards dusk and try to make a habit of it for a few days. Then start shaking the packet in the pop door to lure them inside and scatter some in the coop. Once they realise that treats are in the coop before dark that should make them eager to come in. A window in the coop to allow more natural light in may be better than an artificial light which suddenly goes off leaving them in the dark.

Good luck with them. I know the frustration of trying to get them to bed before you want to go out. It is my standard excuse for being late these days.... "chickens wouldn't go to bed". Roll on the darker nights (don't really mean that!) when they are in bed by 4pm.

Hi Kim

Wow! I am totally impressed at all that riding! I'm sure Harry is enjoying it. I have done a little although probably more with Ian's horses than my own as hunting season is fast approaching and they are fat as pigs! I have also been putting time into Zak doing some driving schooling in preparation for a couple of local shows we have entered. The first was last week and we won our class at our first ever showing event, which was a huge surprise although Ian had put so much work into everything, he really did deserve it and of course Zak was a star. Here is a photo of our lap of honour....

The judge's only criticism was that I should have been wearing a hairnet!.... I have terrible flyaway hair and I so hate being neat and formal, but I will have to conform or risk letting the side down. A hairnet is on the shopping list for tomorrow!.... either that or a buzz cut like Zak!

Think that is all my news for now. I was out on Rascal on Monday and should get out riding on MeMe tomorrow. Pleased to report her leg is healing much better now and is well scabbed over.

Zak really does look beautiful there and what a good lad!

Gosh the judge sounds a bit picky there with the hair net thing. Well I think you look great and so different from the previous pics you posted of yourself!

I shocked myself to be quite honest with all the riding, I have been spurred on though by my friend who has wanted to get out more on her youngster. Not been since Sunday this week though but we are in the morning at 7. Was meant to go at 5 tonight but I've had an horrendous day with my delivering and didn't get finished until 3 this aft. Then the vet rang to say on way for H vaccination so headed to the farm did that and then did my other horse jobs, mum's animals because she on her hols in Greece, diesel in van, drop parcel collections off for friend to take in tomorrow. In the mean time I had not even started my office jobs which needed to be done so I gave riding a miss Harry is not fussed though!

Hope you get out on MeMe tomorrow and fab news about her leg. I love a good scab!!!!

Hi Im a first timer at this. I live in Wales UK, nice to meet you all.
I have been waiting with anticipation for my chicks to hatch. I expected these to be white polish. So far only one has hatched and I had to throw the others away (bar one) as I followed the candling process and the one left doesnt look promising,its day 22.
I am worried now that `Joffrey` will be lonely.
Please could anyone advise what type of Polish he is by the pic, (I assume he is a polish)

Did anyone hatch from your last egg?

Joffrey looks to be a white crested blue or black. His legs are very dark though which makes me think silkie who also are a crested breed. Do you have a pic of him now he's fluffed up even more?

Im desperately still trying to find a freind for him he is 5 days old now. I still initially wanted a White Poland or Sultan. If anyone near South West/South Wales UK know of anything Please do lee me know. kind regards.

Nothing in hatched from the last egg. I candled it about two days ago because no sign of pipping and it looks yolkish. I haven't the heart to turn the incubator off as nothing else in there. But I shall have to now.

He sure is a cutie! He's certainly not white but his colour has me stumped. I've never seen polish chicks that colour.
His black legs and mixed coloured crest have got me.
White crested birds usually have a very defined white/cream crest so I'm thinking he could be from mixed colour parents.

Is he doing ok in his own? You could add a small mirror and small stuffed teddy for him so he thinks he has company.

Oh Yorkshire coop I would do anything to make little joffrey happy. the mirror idea and little animal is something i shall certainly try and see how he responds. I was worried he had no companions to huddle up, but i think hes reached the stage now he is chirping for company. He eats and drinks well. It would be interesting to see what he grows into. I shall certainly keep you updated. Thank you for the assistance.
