Hi.
I've been a member of this forum for about 8 months but only just discovered this thread.
I'm just on the Durham side of the County Durham/Northumberland border. Looks like, so far on this thread, there are people a long way south and a long way north of me!
I am starting to suffer quite badly from what the Americans on this forum seem to call "Chicken Math"!!!
I started with a trio of exchequer leghorns in January this year and things have just gone silly from there!
I now have the original leghorn trio, (Horace, Margo and Matilda)
a pair or cream legbars, (handsome Harry and Lily)
a red sex link, a blue haze and an RIR, (Molly, scranner Anna and Henrietta)
a silkie (Dippy who has shown no inclination to lay me a "Dippy egg" but is cute as a button, so I forgive her!)
a silkie cross (Frances who is ever so pretty but terribly shy and is currently sitting on 9 eggs....today is day 3)
a little white hen that was sold at auction as an Araucana but doesn't lay blue eggs. She does have tufts/muffs though and is therefore called Tasha....I hadn't seen a hen with a moustache before!
Tasha managed to hatch 14 eggs in one brood this summer and 13 of them have survived and are now 9 1/2 weeks.
I also have 4 other chicks (2 welsummer and 2 cream legbar) that are 3 weeks old, which my sister out law gave me and my partner tells me that there are more of those coming my way!.
Currently I give away the eggs my flock produces to friends and family, but as things expand I am going to have to consider selling them to cover costs. They are all free range.
Anyway, I really liked the idea of this thread, to provide sales, swaps and support for those of us within travelling distance here in the UK and just wanted to say that I'm definitely up for that.
I can potentially offer hatching eggs and in a few weeks I suppose, I will have to think about parting with some of my chicks, as they reach point of lay. Not got anything fancy, just some farmyard mutts for anyone wanting a few chickens to free range and produce a few (hopefully blue tinted) eggs, as they are cream legbar x araucana.
Anyway lets try and keep this thread active to attract more UK members.
Best wishes
Barbara
