Baby Araucana chick hatched last night. Seems to have an umbilical hernia. I think there's yolk in it as it looks sort of yellow and pink. What should I do? It's all dried on the surface but squishy inside.

The hernia is shrinking. I put some veterycin gel on it. It's day 3 now and it's gone quite hard and black so I reckon it is done absorbing and the rest will dry up and fall off. Hopefully the abdominal opening will close up first.

Chick is running around eating and drinking and acting like a normal chick so I'm hopeful!

Sorry that you got no response, but glad the unabsorbed yolk sac is getting smaller. Chicks like these can have infections at the sight of the navel. Keep it disinfected so that it will dry up. I hope that she gets along well.

Thank you Eggcessive. She seems perky enough. I'm putting veterycin on it daily.

Thanks! Hernia a little bit more shrunken today. Chick seems happy enough and not bothered by it. Mama hen hasn't pecked it either.
