would it be okay if i mixed a japanese with standards and 3silkies??? some people are tellin me its a bad idea but i really dont see how since i keep little tiny silkies with HUGE standards...
i think the reason they say not to mix silkies with standards is because some of them have a skull that is not entirely enclosed, so a peck on the head could kill them. i think even with an enclosed skull, a standard chicken could do serious damage to a silkie or any other small breed bird. But if they have grown up together and are getting along, then that's a different story.
i would think introducing another bird of any kind would cause some friction and pecking, that's just normal. At least a japanese would be able to fly up and away from any aggression. i personally keep my big girls separate from my little girls.
Depends how agressive the standards are. My japs do just fine out with my really laid back EEs and standard mutts. My little jap roo rules the place and the one standard roo is too easy going to really care. Most of the hens give in to the jap hens as well. When I gave them sunflower seeds yesterday the standards got there first but within a few minutes the 5 tiny bantams had taken over the pile and most of the standards had given up to go drink water or eat feed.
I had a black tail white hen once that i had in with standards and other bantams and i was more worried about the others than i was about her, she was vicious to everyone and had to be rehomed. I have a buff hen now and she is the sweetest thing. She also was in with standards and did just fine.
