One of my babies has a gooey looking string from it's bottom with a little shell stuck to it. It's not red which makes me think it's yolk. Should I leave it in the incubator instead of with the other babies? If so should I adjust the humidity level to help it dry out? The baby is chirping and active. Seems like it doesn't want to be alone.

Welcome to BYC! Can you post a picture of it?

I like to isolate my chicks until that is completely absorbed, but have had chicks snag the unabsorbed part and pulling more out while in incubator. So I now remove possible snags like poking wire from hardware cloth or jagged egg shells.

Thank you. I put it in a small cardboard box with little windows cut out and a medicine cap with water and with food under the heat lamp in the brooder with the others for now.

Can you show us a picture of the vent and umbilical area? I could be wrong- but could that just be the meconium? Is it just hanging by a clear stringy material? Is the abdomen closed (or mostly closed)? I've seen that on other chicks that hatch- usually they break it free when they push out of the egg, but not always. I'll see if I can find a picture.

It's not really clear just gooey looking. The abdomen is closed. Everything looks normal except it's bottom. I did notice the vent area is small and red. It's a very strong willed baby with great lungs! I'm hoping things will dry in the brooder over night.

Here's one of my chicks hatching- it shows the (what I call) poop sac pretty clearly as the chick breaks free from the egg- usually it breaks free when the chick starts scooting around.

Thank you! I think that's what it is. I'm going to leave it and hope it comes off tomorrow. Thank you for your video.

Yep- no problem - if it's still there tomorrow- just take a sharp little pair of scissors and snip it if it hasn't broken free. (assuming of course that the abdomen is closed and everything else is normal- I add that bit for anyone who may run across this thread with the same question in the future). I keep a little tiny pair of curved scissors for just this reason-- the sharp tip points towards me- not the chick. Hopefully it just comes off- but sometimes things dry up and it hardens up kinda like rawhide, then it's more of a liability for the chick- because if it does get snagged on something, it's no longer wet and pliable and easy to snap.
