I have a chick that i hatched with an unabsorbed yolk sac, or at least there is a gooey, bloody mass attached to its navel. I did not assist, it hatched on day 21. It seems to be fine but i don't know. what should I do? the incubator looks gross and i am worried it might get infected but i am not sure if i should touch it.

Pics? For now wrap it in a (damp? I don't remember!) paper towel and stick it in a cup, either back in the incubator or in the brooder. Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.

Hmm. Well, can you see an intact yolk sac? Or does it appear like a ruptured yolk sac? Or is it a hernia? Is it mostly bloody or is there anything yellowish about it?

If you can't see any intestines, I might tie it off and cut. You would need to sterilize the tie and wound with betadine or similar. I haven't had experience with a rupture, though, only unabsorbed yolk sac. I don't know if this is great advice, only what makes sense to me! And get some nutrients into it--NutriDrench, Sav-a-chick, scrambled yolk....
