Unabsorbed yolk sack HELP!!!!!

Your chick actually lived? Wow. Maybe mine will too. I can't keep him settled. He even scrambled over
a 2 inch plastic box. I took the other chicks out of the incubator and cleaned it and put him back by himself.
He's still alive but bled and messed all over so I thought I better sterilize the incubator, it was starting to
smell. The sac is not intact but a bloody eggy horror. He started to get a little weak and I gave him a little
warm sugar water and now he's restless again. He lost so much blood it seems impossible that he is still alive,
but he had about as much egg sac hanging out as yours.

I just noticed your egg looks blue and has a "B" on it. Mine
chick is a blue ameraucana. Any chance yours is too and
maybe this is a problem relating to genetics.

When mine broke the sac I had it in the incubator by itself too. Since it didn't absorb the sac I put down a paper towel and some chick starter and egg for it. The sac kind of stuck to the towel and it was bleeding out so that's why I decided to clamp it for a while and then cut it off. I held the end in my fingers while I watched tv. She did survive and is doing just fine!

No, mine was a welsummer chick. I think it has to do with the humitity in the bator. You have to just decide what you think will work for the chick. If you feel it's dying you mine as well try something to help it. Thats the way I looked at it.

He is still struggling. I periodically change the paper
towel he is on and am trying to keep him sanitary and
warm. I think I should have cut it off because originally
it was a thin flaccid umbilical like cord then the big egg sac.
Now its a thicker tube and the sac broke that bleds and I'm
sure it would be instant death to cut that.
After repeated escapes from the little plastic box I put
in the incubator it finally occured to me to cover him with
a towel. Sweetened warm water revives him when he starts
getting weak but I'm not sure we are making any progress.

I know that all seasoned chicken people will disagree with me, but i had a little serama with a not completely absorbed yolk sac and i knew what would happen if it burst. I tied it off with unwaxed dental floss and clipped it. I applied betadine and that was 3 months ago. My little white serama is alive and well today. I am not saying this is the correct thing to do, only that is what I personally did. ( i used mini forceps and tied just below the forceps. Donna

thank you so much for this info...

I'm new to incubating chicks and
there have been all kinds of challenges
these past couple of months...

the latest being, a chick that hatched
yesterday that had not absorbed all
of the yolk...

the yolk looks as if there is blood in it...

the wee chicklette is still hanging in -
almost 24 hours after hatching....

I've tried dropper feeding her a bit of
sugar water and she's not taking any
yet... keeping her warm and dry...

don't know what else to do....

I don't worry about much these days
and it usually takes a lot to get me
flustered....

Well, with each chick hatch, I'm a
nervous wreck... one recent hatch
has a gimpy leg...

is it something that I'm not doing
properly?

sure hope not... Thank you all for your
support Karen
