I have a chick who is sitting in a cup in the incubator, working on trying to finish absorbing its yolk.

My question is, when do I need to be concerned about trying to make sure it starts eating and drinking?

Hi. A chick can, conservatively, be nourished by its absorbed yolk sac for 48 hours (and up to 72 hours).

Since yours is in a cup, you could offer water or water with a vitamin/electrolyte mix and see if the chick will voluntarily drink. There are also some ideas in this thread about chick chairs - different but still relevant here - of how food and water could be set up close enough for the chick to reach it if s/he has to be in the cup for an extended period of time (see post #5).

Thank you so much for all of your help, I appreciate it so much!

I clearly had an incubator issue, as I only had two of 16 eggs hatch, and both had open navel/unabsorbed yolk issues :(
