Unabsorbed yolks

Sometimes it just happens. Leave them in the bator and they will finish up and be fine.

I've heard high humidity can be the culprit. They pop out before they're ready because it's so easy. Can anyone confirm? It's never happened to me before.

Possible causes: Temps too low during incubation, wide temp swings in incubator, humidity too high during incubation and poor ventilation. Just some things that could have gone wrong.

Just yesterday, one of my baby chicks had a similar problem. I kept him in the incubator sure enough, he's up and running around like a normal chick..

I have a cream legbar fellow who had a LOT of unabsorbed yolk when I picked him up from the people who incubated my eggs. I squished some out by mistake on Saturday. Eww....poor baby! I have put antibiotic ointment on him every day, and it finally seems to be recessing today. Here is the photo from Sunday. As I say, I have cleaned it and antibiotic-ointmented it twice a day, and it is better today. Will he make it? I am hoping that since I brought him home Friday, and he made it all this time, chances are good...?

He's on the left. Girl on the right.

Well, he is a real trooper. I stuck him and his hatchmate with my broody, but she kicked them out after a whole night, so I found them shivering! Poor babies. He looked like he wasn't going to make it, but then BAM! He bonced back and seems OK. A little egg yolk mash with warm water seemed just the ticket. Day 5 for him, so I am hopeful. Still applying antibiotic ointment, but it looks better today. He is a bit teensy, but holding his own. I'm hopeful. Here's tonight:

I have a 5 day old chick right now with the same problem but worse. The only thing is I just noticed it yesterday! Weird I think. Maybe it was really small before and we just didn't see it. But anyway...mine is doing great just after one day. I have been using the antibiotic on it too but haven't seen any improvements on the size of the lump. How long did it take for yours to improve?

Thanks!!!
