Unacceptable Guest Dog

My dog is very well trained but I do not trust her to behave with another dog running free and barking and growling at her. My dog will defend herself in that instance. Shes much larger than their dog and could easily kill it. I try to stay on my MILs good side and if my dog killed their dog...well I dont think that would go over well especially since they are the type of dog owners who make excuses for their dogs poor behavior such as "oh shes just happy to see you" or "shes just playing" as shes jumping and biting at you
I would defend myself too in that situation! Hah don’t blame your dog at all. But definitely probably best to keep her locked up. That said though, the jumping and mouthing probably is play cause if she meant to hurt you, she probably would, BUT that does not make it acceptable behavior. Also pretty ironic and crummy they shot someone else’s dog for attacking theirs when theirs is untrained and maybe vicious? How do they know theirs didn’t antagonize the other dog first? I also would never just shoot a dog like that  even if it was attacking. I would just use pepper spray or something similar or scream at it, etc. or maybe kick it away if I had to but not shoot it. let alone in front of the owners. Didn’t even wait for them to grab it!? I could see maybe if it was a stray attacking livestock or something with no owner in sight but if the owner was there? And I wouldn’t even shoot it for that probably because it’s not their fault some dumb owner let the dog loose. Guns aren’t even allowed here without a license though and even if I had one, we’re too close to other houses to legally shoot.

Apparently they didnt see the owner before the trigger was pulled. They were in a public park that says all animals must be leashed at all times. The police told them they were in the right though. Honestly I personally would have just grabbed the dog and handed over the leash if it was me. I had a similar instance myself but the dog was not aggressive. I just yelled leash your dog as the owner kept trying to call it to no avail. I had to put myself between them. Luckily my dog was well trained enough and on a leash that we could walk away. They didnt leash their dog until it started wandering into the street after us

Ohh okay. I still don’t think I would have shot it myself ha I would have done like you said, just grabbed it. But sometimes that can be dangerous too cause dogs can turn on you especially unfamiliar dogs. That’s why I usually carry something like pepper spray or whatever lately. Or an air horn. That way you can scare them off and/or disable them without hurting them. But of course in the moment, you’re not exactly thinking, but it’s so easy to just shoot someone or something. Obviously I’m sure they’d never shoot a person and it’s a lot different situation but I’ve heard cases like that of road rage or whatever else where someone’s not thinking and just shoots someone else.

It was a situation in which apparently they both were very scared and that was the quickest and most effective action. Idk I wasnt there but I know I would have handled it differently. If it was say a rabid raccoon or a possum or something like that then yea I'd shoot it. I dont think I could do that to a dog though but thats just me.

Yeah agreed!! I mean I’m sure it was very scary and they felt bad I’m sure but I couldn’t shoot it either.

Good news. Broody is back to herself, and chicks were stealing treats from my dog.
Also, don’t give the ‘bring it here’ command to said dog without verifying there isn’t a chick hiding behind her.
She brought me one very mad chick. Slightly slobbery, but otherwise unhurt.

I don't know, I wouldn't second-guess someone...🤔 I mean you don't really know what you would do in the heat of the moment, if you happened to be armed, do you? Maybe you think the dog could be rabid. And even if not, it's not exactly safe to stick your hand in there and try to separate a couple of fighting dogs. You could end up in the ER that way. People have been bitten by their own dogs, trying to separate fighting animals, it's like a shark feeding frenzy, they just bite at anything. If two strong, sensible people each grab a tail and pull the dogs apart sometimes you can separate fighting dogs, but most people try to grab them by their collars, big mistake!

Yeah, I’m sure in the moment you would just do whatever you could to stop it or whatever and I definitely wasn’t trying to be judgemental or anything so I’m sorry if it came across that way at all but I think it’s also just different too because around here almost no one is armed whereas in other areas almost everybody is so I think even armed I still wouldn’t shoot first just because I’m not used to it etc. and it’s different thinking but idk, maybe I would. You’re right, I don’t know and no one does and in the moment you need to act fast. But I didn’t grow up around guns so Ive never had to think of that or whatever

No worries, you're fine. I've seen the damage a dog can do. A loved one was hurt by a dog. I wasn't there at the time but she will wear those scars for life and it makes me wish I had been there, armed. It was a young adult, and she's lucky she didn't lose her leg or even her life. And that's all I'm going to say about it.

Everyone around here carries so its not a strange thought. I know if there was a burglar in my house I wouldnt hesitate. Out in the open however I'm more cautious. You can not know the situation until you access it. In a split second however you may not have that option. I was truly worried that my FIL would get sued but he didnt. I guess I should also mention it was a pitbull. Either way he made the decision he thought was right to protect his own no matter how disagreeable it might seem
