Back in the early part of the last century (1917 - 1918) the following was published in multiple poultry magazines :

The text reads:

EVEN the smallest back yard has room for a flock large​

enough to supply the house with eggs. The cost of main-​

only a few minutes a day.​

An interested child, old enough to take a little responsibility,​

can care for a few fowls as well as a grown person.​

That sure sounds like our vision: "A chicken in every yard!"​

I think this is very timely. This chicken mandate and the call for "Victory Gardens." It seems like we've been implementing this for quite some time. So, is this backyard farming movement a new thing or just something that grew out of the "seeds" planted in our brains? Oh, and btw: we all know it takes more than two hens to provide enough eggs to survive on. LOL!

I should send a copy of that magazine article to my suburban city council, then they might change their minds about chicken keeping!!
