Hi!

I am a new owner of three beautiful backyard chickens. My best layer has an issue under her eye. It is new, I noticed it a couple of days ago.

She is the lowest on the pecking order and I feel so sorry for her. What should I do? What could it be?

Welcome To BYC

Looks like conjunctivitis. Do you notice any bubbles in the eyes or any sneezing, coughing, mucous from the nostrils?

I'd flush the eye with saline, wipe away any debris or pus. Apply Terramycin eye ointment or Original Neosporin in the eye. Do this 2-3X a day. See if the eye improves.

If you notice other symptoms, then you may be dealing with respiratory infection, which may need an oral antibiotic like Tylan, but hopefully this will resolve with basic eye care.
