I hatched some eggs and due to a storm lost power multiple times for a couple hours at a time. to my surprise. most hatched! Sadly, I think this one maybe had some complications due to the multiple changes in temp-humidity and car rides to move them to warmer places. So the problem is the baby chicks feathers are missing in spots and appear under developed. Is there anything I can do to help it? I won't be breeding it in the future just incase...but I dont want to euthanize it at this point either. the feathers it does have are very hard and more like straw or quills.

It looks like it's not drying out well. How old exactly is the chick? And can you take it out of the incubator and get some better photos?

Could it just be a sticky chick? I know I'll occasionally hatch those where the liquid in the eggs was sticky for whatever reason and it doesn't allow the chick to fluff up properly. In those cases sometimes you can carefully wipe them down/rinse them off to get some of the hardened stuff off. You have to be very careful not to chill the chick anytime you try this though and it will probably be fine to just leave it.

It also might be something called clubbed down. A few of my black silkie chicks have had this to a much more mild degree and I once hatched a little black cochin for someone else who had it more severely. It does make the down look and feel very odd.

The good news is if it is clubbed down and that is the only problem it should be fine. It'll probably look a bit funny and may need a little more warmth than the others until it feathers in. It should feather in fairly normally though, I know the ones I had did. :)
