Understanding the lavender gene

Quote:
I think that is a great idea! In any project that you want to work on a new color, you first need very good examples of the breed to work with. Get the very best ones you can find. And yes, pm Shaffer and ask if he has any eggs available, he's very helpful. You can also get on the list for chicks from Chickhatchery.com for lavender Ameraucanas, but I'm pretty sure he was sold out for this year quite some time ago. Lavender is a fairly easy project once you have the lav gene, after that it's all about working on type for the breed. To begin a new color project from scratch would take several years, a book I am reading suggests 4 years, and that's really only the beginning according to the author. However with the lavender Ameraucanas the work has already been started

If you go to the Ameraucana Breeders site there is a thread on there about how the Lavender Ameraucanas were bred.

All genes which are not present in what is considered to be the 'wild type' (which I think is generally considered to be the phenotype of Gallus gallus. Red Jungle Fowl) are considered mutations.
Lavender, like the other mutations, was not made as such, but will have cropped up as a spontaneous mutation at some point.

So, how do you make a patterned color? Like if I wanted Lavender Cuckoo or Lavender Copper Marans? (Assuming of course, that the color is actaully a thing!) I know how I would do it in rabbits, but I'm not sure how to do it in chickens?

If I have a Lavender LF and I cross that to one of the Marans, do I breed the offspring together? Then cross that back to a Maran to get the type back?

If he packs them right like we showed them how, they should make it,

Excuse my saying this Charlie, but it is terribly rude of you indeed to imply that an accomplished breeder like Harry might need you to teach him how to pack eggs.

I would not be the person to ask. I am sure the other lavender folks who have been working on this would be a better resource than me. I am a newbie with lavenders in the bator.

I did seriously consider buying one of Jody's and Charlie's lav/black splits for my Marans last fall, but just couldn't take on another project .

BOOM!!!! First of all i met Harry and you(Charm) three years ago, he called me looking to buy araucana back in 2006 and he bought some from me a couple different times. later as time went by Harry decided to get into shipping eggs, also yous didn't know how to wrap eggs and ship them, we'd showed harry right here at our place how we do it, second yous didn't even know how to incubate eggs and we've hatched how many eggs for both of you, lavender included.. 3rd i was asked how we ship live birds and what services to use..now come on, when i met y'all you only had Sumatra's and maybe 4-5 black ameraucana that was 3 years ago..sorry but the truth hurts sometimes..

This isn't entirely correct. I didnt' read the rest of the 10 page thread, but when I bred my lavender to black, I got black chicks, but I also got what we call "mutts." They have the partridge chipmunk stripes.

Chris, that would indicate to me that either the lavender or blacks were not pure. When I bred black to lav, all of my progeny were black. When I bred my black offspring, now carrying the lavender gene back to a pure lavender bird, I got some lavender progency and some black (carrying the lavender gene).

I'm not sure what would cause a chipmunk stripe in this breeding, except extra wild type genes. I know other stuff can creep up with black birds, as I've seen red in numerous breeds of black, however I've never seen chipmunk. Are you referring to silkies? If so, I haven't worked with those in lavender so I couldn't say what went into developing them.
