Unemployed?

You practically described my parents' house. Green carpet, wood stove and I now have their old orange couch!

I think I'm just starting to come out of the depression stage. I feel depressed because NO one wants to hire me, feels so hopeless, but I'm starting to feel like "who cares I still live here" kinda thing. Maybe I'll get over it.

It's one thing to know the economy is bad and no body is hiring much and it's not just YOU, but it's another thing when YOU are the one getting rejection letter/email one right after another after another...

My husband a self employed joiner, started 2008 with a full book of jobs, infact he didnt know if he could fit all the jobs in.

Then suddenly like a bolt of lightning he had nothing. Nobody was building houses or doing home improvements.

He took it really hard at first, male pride not being able to provide for his family and having to rely on benefits.

Like a good wife i kept nagging at him to start doing more with our garden. We had a little plot where we grew potatoes.

Now i have a greenhouse (husband made out of windows that were going in a skip), we grew lovely tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. He extended the veg patch and we grew potatoes, turnips, carrots, onions, peas, beans, lettuce.

They all tasted so good and enabled us to save money, which enabled us to give the kids a reasonable christmas.

Thankfully hubby has been working since Feb 2009. Which was great, we were able to buy wood to make house so we could get some chickens.

My hubby is, it's been since last June. He is either over qualified or under qualified...........

All this after 17.5 years of faithful service even though they messed up both lungs, almost died because of it several times, they let him go with only 60%, no retirement only medical pay, which was not based off his Chief pay. NOOOOOO you have to have have that for 3 years before they pay off that percentage! So after being lied to, seeing people with less illness get more, battling VA, applying for jobs that kids are managers for and still being turned down, being estranged from all my family- I think we are both in a depression. If it wasn't for my animals and the measly pay check they give us, I'd of lost it awhile back.

My DH got laid off in December and was told he'd be back in January then it was Feb. but none of that materialized. He makes parts as well for automakers. With GM taking a 9 week break it may be a while

Edit to add: I've been laid off since December as well. I'm frustrated by the "Sorry our position has been filled" letters in the mail

I actually went on one job interview, they called me in 3 times, thought I had a job and then nothing. They didn't send a letter or call or nothing to tell me the job had been filled. I took the time to come to them and do all their testing and they didn't have the common courtesy to say I didn't get the job.

We are actually better off right now then we have ever been. But there have been months at a time when we had no income whatsoever. My DH had a bad 4-wheeler accident, and he had a undiagnosed collapsed lung for 6 months and couldnt do anything. SO I can certainly understand!

I am a SAHM, and I really understand the house thing. It is because of the monotony. When that is all you have to do today, it seems so tedious and boring that younever get around to it. But I have discovered that when you have somethign fun to do, your house stays cleaner because you have some motivation for SOMETHING and it carries over.

Get a hobby, preferably one that doesnt cost much, or saves money. Like gardening or something. Or volunteer somewhere, it adds meaning to your days. I really understand!

Well my hubby lost his job(vehicle body repair and painter) this past summer. He was working for a bus co. Got to work on some beautiful buses. Suddenly the bottom fell out of sales. He got back out on his own(self). He does cars,we have a few here and is now doing work on dry dock. Shrimp boats etc. At least now we decided how much to pay the gov. All our everything will be a deduction. Create your own business! I am a bead weaver(on and off loom) Also do other types of jewerly making and beginning to make tack for model horses. Designed(totally beadwoven Arab. native costumes w/halters and presentation collars) will be creating a blog soon....One mistake alot of people make is be dependent on 2 pay checks. We have always lived on one. I am beginning to re think my pets-I love all animals. Instead of animals who need me to work to support them(showing dogs) I will have a dog and chicks and rabbits and goats ect. I call it pets w/ benifits. They all have a job to do. HA!

I have been laid off since August 08. Yeah the depression was a very real problem at first. My husband and I opened a Rotational Molding factory in 06 and have invested everything we had in it so we have been struggling with finance but being a small plant we have been doing better as of late because of the economy we can do the small orders and still make overhead where the big plants can't so there is always a silver lining somewhere you just need a microscope sometimes

I know you probably don't want to hear this but...
I just completed a "Transition Assistance" program with a HUGE amount of information about getting a new job, how to search, how to write a resume, how to interview, SEND THANK YOU NOTES...the whole bit.

One thing that helps with the depression and anxiety is to make getting a job your new full time job.
You need to make one room, garage, desk, bedroom, etc your "Office" where you are not to be disturbed (as much as possible...you still have to take care of house/kids/chickens etc...)

From 0900 am to 5PM You are 100% committed to finding work.
YOU MUST GET UP-SHOWER-GET DRESSED (nice) FOR WORK EVERY DAY!!!! Sorry, no fuzzy bunny slippers and house coat ...YOU ARE GOING TO WORK not just the kitchen table...You fill your day with writing resumes, NETWORKING, making appointments, FOLLOWING UP, SENDING THANK YOU NOTES, etc...Just like working at an office with a 15 minute break at 1030, lunch from 1130 to 1230, break at 3:30 wrap up loose ends at 4:30 and be "off" at 5:00.

Networking is a key thing.
"I know someone, that knows someone, who knows someone that will get me a job" should be your motto. Write it in marker on your mirror so you'll see it every morning.

ALWAYS send a HAND WRITTEN thank you note after any interviews, meetings, even the receptionst for helping you look for work or answering questions etc... It's rare nowadays and will save you a position in the boss's memory.

When you send a resume, FOLLOW UP, three or four days after to give them time to get it and read it.

After an interview FOLLOW UP with a phone call to check progress and ask when you may call again to find out a descision. (But don't be annoying and call all the time)

I have a lot more advice if anyone is interested, let me know.
