Unexpected Duck, new "dry" picture

If your incubators big there may be different temps. in various places e.g. near the edge or near the middle or near the heat source will have different temps.

I dont know yet!!!!!!!! Not even whether it's a beak or a bill! The pip isn't all the way through, and it looks the same now as it did last night. I hope he didnt quit on me after all this time!

Also, my humidity dropped last night. It was 67 when I went to bed and was down to 58 this morning, so I added a warm wet sponge.

I'm trying not to get too worried, because this same thing happened with my first chick that hatched... I had a pip not all the way through at night, and it looked the same in the morning. Then I went to work, and it hatched.

So I'm gonna go to work here today too, and if it's still the same when I get home I'll have to decide whether to wait longer, or try to help it.

I was hoping for some "other" news ....

Well, I too certainly hope all is well with the little bird, whatever it may be! Do keep us posted!

If your humidity dropped you might should help it out. I lost one last night after a humidity drop. It was pipped for quite awhile and when I finally decided to do something it was too late. If it isn't out when you get home, help it out.

Please help quick!

After reading sundownwaterfowl's post about usually needing to help call ducks, and not knowing what mine were for sure, and knowing I'd be gone for 8 hours today..... I enlarged the pip so it could breathe. It is definitely a duck!! There is a bill.

I tried to peel back egg shell, but I saw blood, so stopped. He is trying to peep but sounds very weak!! He can breathe now, but the shell, when I was trying to peel it... was rock hard, not at all like a chicken egg shell, I could barely break it!!

What do i do?? I need to leave in 50 minutes!!

You can't break anymore away if you ran into blood so, there isn't anymore you can do there. I've never hatched ducks so I don't know how hard their shells should be. You could try wrapping it in a moist towel for humidity if you think that would help.

Good luck!

Ok, well if no one else has any other ideas, I guess all I can do is wait until I get home and see if he's still alive. Maybe by then I can help him more, if he is.

Yep - if you hit blood, you have to wait until the vessels receed more before you can help any more.

Keep the humidity up and check back when you get back in. At least if you poked a hole in the shell, you know the little one will get oxygen.

Hoping for the best!!

A duck needs more humidity. I'm so anxious for you. How much blood? The membrane lining is a tiny bit bloody. If you think it is just that I'd get it out since its been so long since pip.
