a friend of mine asked me today why his chicks were dying. From what he said, I have never seen it before and didnt know what to tell him so I told him I would post his problem here to see if any of you knew.
Here's his deal.
His staggered hatch chicks are in a large brooder, well heated, with medicated feed and vitamins in his drinking water.
What he seems to be having is chicks start showing yellow droppings, then within a day or two they are dying. Doesnt seem to get all of them he says, seems the 1-3 week olds are most effected, after 3 they tend to hang in there.
Most are dead in big groups, 5-15 at the time .
When he finds any that might be on deaths door, he says they are trembling as if they are cold and can hardly move, but the brooder is well heated. Also say's it seems very quick, chicks who showed no signs today, are often dead the next day when he comes to check on them.
He has used Corid on them, but I told him it's not cocci as it take 3 weeks or so to develope.
He has used broadspectrun antibiotics, oxytetracycline based he thinks??
keeps vitaims in the water all the time for them, well every other day I think is what he said.
I was stumped on this one....
If any of you have had any dealings with this, It would be nice . He's a 75 year old man who just enjoys messing with birds as a hobby, but it's killing him to watch all his chicks dye like this and I really wanted to help him out if I could. But I dont want to go over there for fear of bringing something home.
