Unhatched Eggs

did you see any movement in the two eggs? I haven’t hatched eggs in a while and I never really candled after day 18.

Were those eggs with her at the same time as the ones that hatched?

I don't have much experience with it but I don't think there was movement. The eggs having been under her right up until yesterday when she seemed to be off and on them and then started laying in one at a time. I know some eggs were at least a few days later than the first few she started laying on. I never got a good timeline because she's quite protective and I could only check the nest if I caught her off of it.

Like another member mentioned, I guess it's best not to take a gamble of them being bad eggs and exploding.

If you don’t get grossed out, you can try cracking them open for peace of mind that they were dead. I personally like to know when in the gestational period they stopped developing.

If you didn't hear chirping and you didn’t see movement then most likely they aren’t viable.

I think that's what I'll do on the weekend. My curiosity will drive me crazy if I don't, I'd like to have a better idea of what happened.

Have you gotten around to checking the eggs?
Luckily I didn't because Saturday morning one of the eggs started to hatch and I was able to watch it hatch throughout the day and we got chick #5!! It was the larger of the two and i was really surprise when i saw the cracks since she had been off and on it. I was so impatient all day waiting and so thankful when it was safely out and all of them are doing great! The 6th egg is still intact so I'm going to check it today since Mama has left it alone.

I just opened the last egg that didn't hatch and unfortunately there was a chick in there. I'm guessing it died in the shell for whatever reason. It was a small egg so I'm not sure what happened. The membrane was quite thick on this one and stuck to the chick. The last egg that hatched the shell cracked off but the chick was trying to get through the membrane and the shell from the first 4 chicks to hatch just seemed like they broke in half shell and membrane.

Aww. So it wasn't breathing when you opened it?

At least the other egg made it. That’s really shocking in a good way. How many days after from when the first egg hatched did it finally hatch?

I am surprised that one made it since the hen got off and on. But now I have that knowledge to possibly encourage others to just wait a bit.

No it was gone, the eyes still looked like they were sealed shut but I'm not sure how that works wth chicks. She had been off the egg for quite a few days so I have I feeling it may have been gone for a while.
The first 2 hatched on the 21st, another on the 23rd and 24th and then the last hatched on the 26th. I was really surprised but they are all doing well. I'm not sure if since she was a first timer that's why she got off eggs when the other chicks started being more active and that's why the last one died or not. I'm really glad I procrastinated taking the last two eggs from her though since she still seemed to have some interest in them.
