About a year ago we got chickens from a local person who raises chickens as a hoby. We wanted 6 RIR hens for laying eggs. We ended up with 5 roos and one hen because niether one of us knew enough about chickens. We got rid of 4 of the roos, kept one and kept the hen. We thought the roo was a RIR until a few days ago. While looking on this site, my husband saw some info that led him to believe our roo might be a buckeye. The roo is 1 year old now and 7 and 1/2 pounds. He is rich mahogany all over, with a regular, red single comb,(but not a pea comb like the buckeyes have) and his under feathers are grayish (like they buckeyes).
The hen has a dark head and neck, mahogany color, and the rest of her is a lighter brown. Her under feathers are white. She is only 4 pounds and 15 ounces....too small to be a RIR, plus a RIR shouldn't have white feathers. I understand that RIR's should have uniform color through out their entire body. Any thoughts as to what they might be?

I realize that this is not the best picture to see them both clearly, but it may give you the basic idea of what I have described. They won't stay still long enough for me to get a better photo.

Okay, here are some better photos

I would say RIR, but im not sure.. From the picture it looks like a rhode island red body type though. Maybe he could be a cross?

As for the hen i would suspect some American gamefowl in her, or maybe a lakenvelder? "Yes, not the right color, but lakenvelder-crossed onto a darker red color.. Could maybe look like that if it were a golden lakenvelder". But i expect with lakenvelder in her she would be bigger.

I would definitely say a RIR cross of some kind...the roo is much too small at 7 lbs to be full RIR, though he has the look of it...and the female, well, she's pretty brown, rather than red, but could be a PQ RIR...

Could she be a New Hampshire Red?

As a side note:
It is interesting to see the photo of the back of the rooster's head. You don't get to see that angle very often, and I noticed the feathers on the back of his head look like they've been combed or slicked-back. Does anyone know if that is something that only roosters have?

I personally don't think the hen is a New Hampshire, she is just to darn small. The RIR's and the NH reds are very close in body size, and the NH's are bred to be better meat birds so I would think if anything, the NH would even be slightly larger. At first we thought she was a NH or a Production, but she never got as large as those types.
