So I’ve recently discovered that my chickens have either lice or mites. They have access to dust bathes, but it is just too hot to keep the mites away. I am going to completely deep clean the coop tomorrow and treat it with food grade diatomaceous earth. I don’t know what type of bug that they have though. The bug (or it’s eggs) look like tiny brown sesame seeds and they are clinging to the base of the feather. Does anyone know what these are?

We are in Kentucky if that helps with identifying them.

Not sure what they are, but DE wont work. Permethrin would get rid of mites and lice.

After I posted this thread I started looking at other threads and read about permethrin. Sounds easier to treat them with permethrin than having to dust them all with DE lol
Well the thing is the at DE doesnt even work for infestations (false "facts" online)

Good luck! I recommend getting a permethrin dust and spray. Or, you 'could' also spray the hens with permethrin spray, making sure to avoid the vent.

So what do you recommend I treat the hens with if not permethrin? Should I spray the walls of the coop and dust the floors and nest boxes with permethrin? How do you suggest going about it and how many times should I repeat it if any?

Usually, its easier to dust chickens with permethrin dust and spray down the coop with permethrin spray.

That's lice, I see the yellow/White ones on my birds. They need another treatment, but it's been terribly wet lately.
