Where do you get your chicks from?

I purchased my girls from Murray McMurray Hatchery. I ordered 9 chicks and opted for the free rare exotic chick. All 10 chicks survived and are now 9 weeks old. As we could not narrow down the breed, I emailed photos of the freebie to their customer service. They emailed me back to inform me that the rare chick was a Bielefelder and she is a pullet which makes it awesome. Murray McMurray goes out of the way to help their customers. You won't be disappointed with this hatchery, it's services and customer service. I recommend that you give them a try.

There are very few hatcheries in Ontario and they mostly do 4 basic breeds like BR, RIR, Leghorn and CornishX. The other breeds like Orpington, Wyandotte or Maran were sold out almost before the start of the season. We can order from TSC stores or local feed stores but again, it is the 4 basic breeds. They don't bring in a bunch of chicks and you pick them out. They have to be ordered in advance during "chick days". There is one hatchery that does some interesting and rare breeds, but you have to pick them up and it is a 5 hour drive for me one way.

Therefore, I got my chicks from local backyard breeders on Kijiji (Canadian equivalent to Craigslist). However, you can't always be sure that what they tell you is what you are getting.
