Unopened Expired Yogurt 8/16/2017

I give my dogs, chickens, and quail plain yogurt in small amounts as a treat about once a month, as it helps with the "good bacteria" in their stomach. They've never had a problem, and it was vet recommended for the dogs. I'd be more worried about the high sugar content if the one in question than the close-by expiration date, as my chickens don't get things with lots of added sugar.

I bottle fed all my chickens, so I don't know what you are talking about.

Seriously though, I said I feed it to my chickens in small amounts once a month as a treat. They gobble it up and process it just fine, or at least my quail have for 5 years and my chickens have in the 1.5 years I've had them. Pretty much anything non-toxic is going to be fine in small doses occasionally. Some people feed their chickens leftover meat, which I personally do not do. Someone asked for advice and I gave personal experience, but your milage may vary.

I just don't get why someone would feed something for the benefit of digestion that has the potential to cause digestion issues when there are better alternatives; and at a lower cost.

Big Ole Bird from Southland Organics is an option. There are other pro biotics for chickens too.

If I can feed it to the chickies as a treat, instead of tossing it into the garbage, no harm then. I've not seen 1/4C of greek yogurt mixed into some oats cause any distress in my flock, and they enjoy it... just like the yogurt smoothie I make for my son.

I see posts on BYC asking about frozen and leaking nipples all the time...

All joking aside, Dairy products have good nutrients, and are a good source of calcium. I've never noted my birds to have digestion problems from drinking clabbered milk, whey from yogurt, old yogurt, the bits of cheese shaved off a ripe block of cheese... if it has nutritional value, it goes to the birds instead of down the drain. Farmers of old often gave their poultry dairy products that were past their prime. And, if it's past it's prime, the bacteria in it has digested much of the lactose. While dairy does not make it into my flock's diet often, I am not at all shy about giving them a dose of it now and then.

As for mammals being given dairy... I've known many cats who absolutely can't tolerate cows milk. I would be more likely to give milk to my birds than to any cat in my care.

If I have some milk in the fridge that is smelling a bit "off", I set it on the counter till it clabbers or curdles a bit, then give it to the chickens. They suck it down.

Lower cost? I don't think anyone here is rich enough to buy their birds stuff like that special. I feed dairy to my birds only because it is spoiled and would otherwise go to waste.
