Unpopular opinion:I can't stand when people think any 2 animals will just get along fine

I can leave my trained old lab out all day with the birds. She is murder on pheasants and dux. But she knows chickens and turkeys are off limits.

He’s a Dutch shepherd and yep that’s a game hen. I have a few dogs. I don’t let them all run around with the chickens without me out there with them.

Supervision helps. I’ve lost a hen to a dog that went nuts and bit her leg right through a wire fence. I’ve been wondering how to train a dog to leave chickens alone.

But how does she know to leave the chickens alone?? Curious

A lot depends on the kind of dogs. I have an adult female that’s fine with the chickens but I have another that is just too rough and wanting to play. There’s a big difference between breeds and lines of those breeds.

I also think it’s a lot easier to start from day one with a puppy when they’re easy to correct. Once a little bigger they can munch a bird by the time you get to em.

My dog is really good around the birds until she sees my daughter chasing them, then they are fair game until she is corrected again. Dogs are like toddlers.

Though, the chickens have been confined to the run for a month. I may sing a different tune in the spring.

I agree with the comment about silkies being relative to a feather duster rather than a toilet brush and having recently acquired a silkie, I can say with authority that the only real difference between a silkie and a feather duster is that my silkie is not rainbow coloured (yet).
