Just brought a new rooster and hens but unsure of the age of the rooster as he won't crow or try to mate the hens. He looks fully grown and is much larger than the hens. Is there a way of telling the age?

Pictures would be good. I'm assuming he's probably around 6-7 months and not fully mature yet.
Yep here are some photos

He looks fairly young probably close too a year old. Keep in mind you just brought him to a completely new place. It might take him sometime to get used to his new surroundings. If he still doesn't crow he might just be a quiet rooster. Adding to that do you have any other roosters? Roosters generally don't crow unless they're the dominant one.

No we don't have any other roosters. He also doesn't mate with the hens. which is a problem for us as we were planing on hatching out eggs.

Beautiful fellow! An Australorp?

Give him a couple weeks to get used to things.

Some roosters are so gentlemanly that they'll perform their duties without you even noticing. I only ever saw my Black Langshan, Ludwig, mate a couple times in over a year but the eggs were fertile before Rameses matured and I have black chicks with feathered feet in my brooder right now. :D
