unwelcomed suprise RANT!!!

The Northward folks don't really have a choice because it snows so much if their kids were out every time it snows, they'd never complete a school year. I think the biggest thing and reason why Northern folks don't understand our snow days is WE as in most folks here have never had to drive in it, and therefore do not know how without a pileup. Also, northward of here is a dry cold. There is NO WAY I would ever make my kids walk to anywhere to catch a bus in the snow here. With winter humidity still reaching 30% most of the time, it's a recipe for respiratory illness in 20 degree weather. It's like when I spent a summer in Louisiana...humidity is a huge factor in the feel of the temp! It's a damp cold here. I guess that's why it appears we don't do well with snow. I and some of my family have lived North and South and when you have done both, you can REALLY tell the difference. Now it's RAINING!!

Well, I do understand that southern states are not equipped to handle much snow, nor are southerners used to driving it or used to the cold. However, I must disagree with the humidity thing. It is currently 47% humidity here, so we certainly get our high humidity here and we all survive. Our town kids almost must walk to school, rain, shine, snow or sleet. I am not sure about all northern states, but Michigan, because of being surrounded by the Great Lakes always has high humidity!

I didn't say that to start a debate.

I spent most of my life on the shores of Lake Erie. TONS of snow. We were lucky to have one day off school a year because of it. But since we've moved here- the kids miss at least 2 weeks every school year. The problem is the mountain roads, and lack of equipment to handle the distances that kids travel to school. We were stranded after that big storm last week- all the roads up the mountain were blocked by flipped tractor trailers and cars. Thank god we had money for a hotel, and my teenage son was home to take care of my daughter and the dog. It gets really treacherous when you have to climb/descend over 2000 feet and there are no plows.

We haven't gotten any snow or rain yet but you guys have me freaked out. I thought we were done for a while!

We just have hills on this side of Tennessee, but they are not passable either. I was stuck for a week snow before last because of the road conditions a quarter mile one direction and a half mile the other...I had a WHOLE 3/4 miles I could drive up and down the road if I wanted...LOL!! I got to where I wanted to just to get out the house! We have more rain coming now and the snow is melting off, but temp is dropping again and it will refreeze tonight so I can wake to a bigger mess tomorrow. YAY!!

I just want it to be APRIL RIGHT NOW!! LOL! I bought garden seeds last week but I must be kidding myself!

I wasn't debating anything. I agreed with you, southern states aren't equipped to handle snow like northern states, then I corrected the misinformation that northern states had low humidity.

Forecasting 3-8 in ct tonight

I'm a little scared for my day-olds cackle shipped them today.

We own a 24 yr old chevy blazer - don't care how much it snows -

I WILL MAKE IT TO THE POST OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of the schools in our area of lovely western Minnesota had a snow day today. The issue isn't really the fact that it snows. It's that it BLOWS! Any wind and it's almost white out conditions. My husband went out to make sure the dogs were okay and to get the mail. My car is drifted in, he said up to his thighs (he's 5'8" if that helps) and the driveway is at knee deep. The dogs are up to his waist, but the drift was hard, so he could walk over it. He had to go and dig out their dishes so they could be fed. They're huskies, so they have no problems with this snow. It's just that the wind is from the south and east, the two directions from which we're not protected at all. North and west we have the grove for protection. I'm with many other people. COME ON SPRING! We're in a Winter Storm Warning until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. That means we won't get out until around 9:00 a.m. at the earliest when the plows go by and the neighbor gets over here with the tractor to blow us out.

Hate to say it, but hunker down as best as you can and try to make the best of it. Maybe have a picnic in your house to keep the thoughts of spring in mind?
