This morning around 9 am I took the older chicks out to the covered penn for the second time in their lives. I had just closed the pen and settled down to watch them when out of the blue, a young hawk swoops down about four ft in front of me and slams into the side of the pen after the chicks.
Even after that initial slam, It still tried to push through to the now terrified chicks. I got up and chased it off after the initial shock of the sudden event. My rooster, big red did the warning crow as the young bird had already hit land (guess he didn't see if quick enough).
The poor chicks were so petrified after that attempt that they were still as statues as I quickly recollected them to bring them back in. I am incredibly glad I put a second defense barrier around the Pen or the hawk would have flown off with one of the babies that morning.
