This morning around 9 am I took the older chicks out to the covered penn for the second time in their lives. I had just closed the pen and settled down to watch them when out of the blue, a young hawk swoops down about four ft in front of me and slams into the side of the pen after the chicks.😳 Even after that initial slam, It still tried to push through to the now terrified chicks. I got up and chased it off after the initial shock of the sudden event. My rooster, big red did the warning crow as the young bird had already hit land (guess he didn't see if quick enough).

The poor chicks were so petrified after that attempt that they were still as statues as I quickly recollected them to bring them back in. I am incredibly glad I put a second defense barrier around the Pen or the hawk would have flown off with one of the babies that morning.

Hawks are terrible. I've had them swoop down right in front of me more than once. Thankfully nobody from your flock was hurt. :hugs
They have never been so brazen here before. Beautiful bird that I don't want to see close up again unless it is being handled by professionals. That was way to close to my babies!

In a way, it was a novel experience seeing as how I've never gotten to see one so clearly up close and personal before.

Glad your babies are ok! Hawks get so focused on their potential meal, they can zoom right past you, in front of cars, etc... I had an adult Red-tail fly right into the hardware cloth toward chicks in the run. I was standing right there, it just hung on the wire for several seconds, chicks scattered like mice. Amazing and scary at the same time!

Totally agree with that. The one I saw was rather small, mostly brown with bits of white.

Could have been a Sharp-shinned Hawk, they are a small brown and white hawk. I love looking at hawks, they are so majestic, rulers of the sky, pretty too. As long as they aren't eating my birds or my small dog that is.

Same here. We have min pins and a pom in an area that's filled with bald eagles and large hawks.

I have never heard of that species in my area before.

We've got Eagles here too, fortunately they have never bothered anything. You would have to do some research on the types of hawks in your area. :)
