UPDATE- didn't make it. Lice/dehydration/anemia/neurological

Woo hoo! Great news! I haven't used gatorade; I prefer unflavored pedialyte, but whatever is working, fantastic. I think if you keep with it, keep putting a bit of food and liquid in every hour or so, keep her quiet and comfy, she may be fine shortly!

Hooray for the turn around!!! I was worried. I wanted to let you know that I've used Sevin dust on my animals for years and they all live to a ripe old age. DE is a good deterrent for mites and lice but not an effective treatment once an infestation has taken hold.

Sevin dust is the most effective product to use. I literally rub the dust all over with my hand, making sure to get the belly, the back end, under wings, between toes if it's a dog or a cat. Other people take precautions with masks and rubber gloves -- whatever. Another method is to dump a couple of cups of Sevin dust in a plastic bag, put the hen in the bag up to her head. Gather the bag around her neck. Maneuver the dust within the bag to completely coat the chicken.

Oh, Sevin dust can be had at hardware stores or garden stores. I'm wishing her a continued improvement. Let us know how she does.

Spray the cracks and crevices as well as their nesting boxes and perches with.....rats...can't remember the name but it has "orange" in the name. Will try and look for it in the basement. Orange guard maybe.....

YAHOO!!! Great news.

I wouldn't bother with the DE at this point. DE is more of the preventative. What it does do takes too much time.

5% carbyl Seven dust
or
permethrin poultry/garden dust or spray.

Those have an immediate effect and are safe for birds. You can even use Adam's flea and tick spray if you have it. With whatever you use be sure to get under the feathers and in direct contact with the skin. Careful not to get it on the face or in the eyes.

Thanks everyone.

I dusted her (and the others) with Permethrin dust and completely changed the shavings in the coop. I did not notice anything on the others, so it should hopefully just be her that was so bad. She has done a complete turn around and looks almost back to normal. She is eating and drinking and walking and even started talking to herself

I'm going to leave her inside in the storage bin for now to keep a close eye on her.

Here is another question then... what should I do to help her recover from anemia? I bought some Poly Vi Sol vitamin drops but accidentally bought the regular kind (with iron). I didn't use them because I read the iron was bad. BUT, would it be good, in small amounts, to get her some iron??? Or is there a better way to do it?

Can you return the Poly-Vi-Sol and get the kind without iron? Give her hardboiled egg, yogurt -- beans are a good source of protein... or tuna (mine are only so-so on tuna). Green leafy veggies like spinach, kale and collard greens are natural sources of iron.

I would do a search on here under "nutrition" or "nutritional boost".

Glad she is improving so nicely,
Jenny

Thanks

She loves yogurt, I gave her some more today. I'll give her some more hard boiled egg tomorrow. But I'm confused- isn't anemia a lack of iron, not protein?

I still can not believe she is alive. What a huge turn around.
