sold my two red hens (the noisemakers) and suddenly found someone who was selling off his pekin /cochin bantams (in israel not sure what they are called in the states, the ones that have feathery legs, and look like teakettles)..
he has no time for all his chickens so was minimilizing his stock: they are layng and will also set (which i dont need really)... i told him to choose me two red ones (he had different colours but i have a weakness for red/rusty coloured birds)-- they are a bit wild, not used to being handled, but i moved them to their carton and put them in the coop in a 'separetion' box for the night.
they self released themselves (they could push the door open if they want to go out) and the girls ingnored them; the next day i already had a nice creamy small egg from each of them, in the proper nest box; they found the food and water themselves, and managed to go up the rock, in to the hen house, and get up on the roost, to sleep among the four leghorns.
meanwhiel, i discovered that one of the leghorns also has a raucous voice and also one of the pekins is 'chatty' but not qute as loud and only in the morning, so should be ok.
the shnitzels are way too heavy to roost or get around, and will be meat tomorrow at dawn , in time for thai new years celebrations... hubby's brother will dispatch them, and they will become a reincarnation once again. meanwhile they will be chicken with basil in thai curry, and thai chicken soup with cilantro and hot peppers, among other things... sweet birds, they had a good quiet life, of food, water, fresh air and fun, but now they cna barely move or hold their weight on their legs, plus they **** like crazy ...
