Update: HAPPY ENDING! - Friday 13th - One dead, one injured.

Trish,

That is what is commonly thought, but I guess in the case of chickens and wounds, I have been horrified to learn that maggots can be a scourge.
I would never have thought this could happen either, but have learned alot just in this last 3 weeks with several cases of this on the forum. So sad and scary.

If they are wounded, never leave them outside, please.

Wolf, so glad your lil gal is doing well, its wonderful to hear about her indomitable lil spirit.

Chicken Matthews is making a great recovery.

She is getting Baytril every day and seems to be doing great. The area where her wing was amputated looks good - no redness or swelling and the bandage is barely affixed. She's been staying in my office with me at night while I work or surf the net.

Tonight, I've arranged for a "sleep over." Her smallest sister, Spunky, is in with her to keep her company. I put them together and watched them and they seem to be getting along fine. The last I checked, they were up on the roost in the dog crate where Chicken Matthews has been living the past week. I want to start getting them acclimated to each other again as I hope I can put her back out when she goes back to the vet on Friday.

More to come!

See - I told ya she'd be spoiled. She's already having a "sleepover"! She'll be having a birthday party before you know it.

I just finished reading all the postings for your little chicken matthews/lefty. I sure hope she is doing better now. I have learned alot from this and would like to say thank you to you and eggcetra for all the information that you both passed on to all of us "newbees".

I would like to make a comment about the "bath"; I have researched several sites since I am looking into showing a few of my pretty babies. My 7 yr old is really into the chickens and wants to show them. Anyways, as for the shampoo, you can use baby shampoo rather than the "show shampoo". I don't know if this helps anyone else but thought I would let you know.

And remember.... maggots are a good thing too ONCE in a while LOL.
I really hope all goes well and good luck!

Wolfpacker,
What vet did you take her to? Just in case I need a vet that'll look at chickens. I don't know of any.

Dr. McKinnish is Chicken Matthews' "attending physician," but I think the bird specialist is Dr. Brown. According to their cards, they do "dogs, cats, caged birds, Guinea pigs, rabbits, and exotics."

Hey, while I was typing that, Chicken Matthews just preened her bandage off. They said that would be OK, so I guess that's good!
