UPDATE!!! How to cope......

Very sorry for your loss. Nothing can replace your kitty. Just have your son talk with you about the fun things that Chance did. Get his mind of the horror of what he saw.

I am sorry to hear that. We had to put down or 14 year old dog that we got from the pound. I grew up with that dog. She had a tumor in her throat and she went down hill fast. It is really hard! Sorry again! I hate how people are so inconsiderate when it comes to hitting peoples animals I understand they are in the road but seriously it takes a second to check on them and move them to the side if necessary. When that happens to me I atleast try to find the owner!!!!

oh no!! i'm so sorry - thats just awful.

i'm not sure that anything helps - just go ahead and cry.

i lost one of my two 19 year old cats that i had since they were 7 weeks. it still hurts me to say her name.

dont be in a hurry to get a new one - just walk thru it.

I'm so sorry for your loss and the horrible circumstances. One thing we've done is to make a memorial - a little spot in the living room with a framed photo or two, favorite toy(s), and maybe a poem (written by your son) about what a great friend Chance was. Talking about the good things, the things he did that made you laugh etc really helps a lot. Your son may need to talk about what he saw more than you do, or not at all. It's all o.k.
If you have other pets, remind him how important the living are, and that maybe the other pet(s) miss Chance too.
Again, my condolences.

And please help him understand that the driver could not have done anything for the cat. Most likely he drove off because he realized this.

We make a choice when our animals prefer to go outdoors and live a more natural life. I have owned only rescued cats and dogs for some 40 years. Almost all my cats, raised indoors, eventually wanted to be outdoors part of the day. I have no doubt this shortened their lifespan, but I also know they lived their lives as they wanted to live them.

Excuse me, the cat is scratching at the door and wants in.

I'm am so sorry to hear about the loss of your cat. He was beautiful. It is devastating to see an animal you love get killed, especially so for a child. Encourage you son to talk about his feelings, The guy probably realized there was nothing he could have done for your cat. But he could have at least stopped to say he was sorry. A good cry to cleanse the soul. I don't think we ever get over loosing a pet we love.
