*UPDATE* How to Pick a Good Rooster?

Trying to decide on the KIND of rooster I would like to buy . I really and looking for maybe 3 - 4 months old . I have 35 hens right now .


Should I go with rule of thumb 1 for every 10 hens ?

I am wondering if throwing roosters into a FLOCK of 35 hens pullets would start a WAR ?


We have 3 hens that are already laying , 3 about ready to lay anyday , 1 trying to decide to start laying again , and 28 teens about 12 - 14 weeks old . ALL PULLETS . PLEASE ADVISE ................

WE were also told if you have roosters your eggs DO TASTE BETTER . TRUE OR FALSE ?

How many girls do you have? Could you keep 2 of them? Up until very recently I have always had 2 boys. As long as they get along, they will share the rooster duties. Atleast in my experience. One would lead the flock around, and the other escorted the girls to and from the coop to lay thier eggs. Poor Ducky was the first victim to the coon when it decided to start attacking during the day. His girls got out of the nest safly, Im sure he went down in glory.

The head rooster will typically be the one that crows the most.

Cajunlizz.....After a horrible coon break in, my girls were left with no rooster to lead them. When I finally brought a rooster home (full grown) they were fawning at his feet LOL. It was dark when I got home, so I put him in the tack room until morning. When I go out there, the 4 girls were circling the barn trying to get to him. I opened the door and it was love at first sight

Hope that helps. I think ratio is about 1 to 8. Dont hold me to it though!

Oh...make sure you either introduce 1 rooster at a time, or idealy bring a few home that already get along very well.

UPDATE!
We picked Mochi! Today, we took Amos and Bob to our friends who raise chickens and said goodbye. The boys will be living on a farm with an acre to roam about on and their new owners are excited to mate them. Oh, I was sad to see them go, and their departure had the flock very upset. I teared up. Poor roos. But now our backyard flock is a little quieter, and a little more peaceful with just one rooster. Thanks for all of your input.

ALSO: EXCITING NEWS! Penguin is a hen, not a rooster! The other day, she lost her tail feathers that stuck up like a roo's, which we didn't think much of. But then, one of our roosters started doing the rooster dance for her. And, to top it off, she has taken to hanging out in the nesting box with the other hens in the afternoon, so I think she is starting to think about eggs! Woo-hoo! We have an Ameriucana hen after all! I am so excited! Our chicken farmer friends told us that the tail may have fooled us because Ameriucana birds often have wild tails since they come from Araucana tail-less stock bred with all sorts of other birds and are therefore tail mutts! Hooray for another hen!
