One more helpful hint I haven't seen on BYC (it's probably somewhere, I just didn't see it). Borrow a magnet from someone who works construction or with metal. Looks like a little bar at the bottom of a broom handle. I combed it thoroughly through the run before we let the chicks in. It dragged up both the new dropped bits of metal (and those pesky hardware cloth snipped bits -- even the very little bits), as well as some which look at least 30 years old.

Pets helping? My cat likes to lay down right between me and the keyboard when I'm online. Sometimes, I can't even use my mouse because his head is laying on my arm.
