Update on my two ee's.

I see, I think I get that.
I agree with Overo - but to clarify, that's mostly in mixes, or certain colors. Many purebred males obviously won't have any red if that's not their breed coloration. But if you've got a mutt like an EE and red starts coming in, it's a real easy clue.

Ah, that makes more sense. Although, I recall seeing many hens, who I thought were already laying, with red marks as Overo described.

You must not quite understand what I meant. The red I speak of is male specific. Hens will not have it.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes - it's MUCH more common in mixed breeds.

These are all cockerels. See the red?

Do you see what we're talking about in terms of male-specific red? Males will have bright patches on the shoulders, not just a little bit spread around. Especially in young males, vibrant patches on their shoulders is an easy clue.

That's the thing, I've seen hens with it- On the neck and shoulders. And I'm not just talking about that light red color, dark almost almond color red i have seen as well. I don't have any myself, but I could've swore I've seen it happen. Other then that, I do get what y'all are saying

Although, maybe I'm just imagining it, it just seems a bit odd. And if I have, maybe they didn't lay and were really just slow maturing roosters.
