UPDATE----Policeman Neighbours AlsationDog killd 4 of hens

Pile dead chicken bodies on his doorstep, or tie them to his fence.

Send small children to stand in front of his house with dead chickens.

Eventually these folks get a sense of shame.

It is always tough when persons in authority are the ones doing wrong. Your mum probably knows what is safest for you to do, and it is sooo frustrating that it may be nothing. The dog should at least be restrained.

I am so sorry about your birds.

”In Ireland, people carry a sense of shame, and one of the most shameful things you can do is to allow a person to starve himself on your doorstep”.

If this saying is true, then the Irish are a sensitive people to suffering. Why not secretly put the massacred bodies of the chickens on the doorstep with a sign saying….”Your dog bites children and kills your neighbor’s animals.” Take pictures; anonymously notify the TV stations for human-interest stories.

Then again, this may not be such a good idea. Maybe you could sit on his doorstep and go on a hunger strike until there is restitution. Mum might frown on that one.

These are really NOT such good ideas anyway. Either way, you need to find out what the law in your area. Breaking the law is breaking the law even for a police officer.

Do you have a animal protection organization in your area? Contact them for help. Why not contact The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Are your chickens safely confined by a fence in your own yard and did the dog break in? If they were in a protected area...your case is only made stronger by showing that this dog is a menace.

Do you know the owner? You must approach him and tell him what his dogs are doing. I have links with Ireland, and as far as I'm aware you can get compensation. HIS dog MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO KILL OTHER ANIMALS OR BITE PEOPLE!!!!! Please report it to your guarda (sp?) (police) and file a report

IrishBoy, I understand why people are proposing some slightly drastic things about how to get this man's attention, and the attention of the neigbors or newspapers, but really, it's best to try to talk to him in a polite way first. Try not to let anything about him being a retired policeman leak in to dealing with him, and I agree, don't let it stop you from filing a report too.

Maybe there is a history with the dog, but that doesn't mean you can assume he's an evil man. (ok, evil may be a strong word, but you know what I mean)

If you cannot speak to him, write him a businesslike letter making your points about how the dog was clearly seen carrying your chicken and all the dead ones laying around him. spend some time on the letter so it is organized and sensible.

Tell him that this is a loss to your family both because the hens are pets, but that they also provide eggs for your family. (probably some extra people too, or extended family!)

Let him know that you understand his dog is HIS pet, but the destruction of your pets and food supply is not acceptable in any way.

I'm sorry you lost so many hens and I hope this man realizes that it is wrong of him to continue to allow things like this to happen.

Keep a copy of the letter, take pictures of the dead birds, and if all else fails and it happens again THEN show the letter and pictures to the newspaper and let them know about past things. Don't make threats to this man, he's probably frustrated to and that can only lead to escalated tension and anger.

Good luck, and again, sorry for your losses.

//edit// I am not sure how old you are, but even if you are an adult, or nearly one, it hurts NOTHING to practice a 'conversation' with the man with someone else. I do that with a friend for important things where I have to have words ready, like a job interview or a difference of opinion with a co-worker or something. It helps you have your 'game plan' at the ready.

Fair Winds,

Bill

I read the update in the first post - not sure how it was arrived at, but the guy gave some $$$ to compensate. IrishBoy - Glad you can at least "get some back", and good luck on your new hatch! I hope it never happens again, though...
