***update** REALLY NEED SOME HELP!!! Raw spot on Barred rocks back

Hi Everyone,

My daughter came in from the coop with one of our BR's who has feathers and skin missing from it's back. We are thinking her and the other girls might have been pecking at it today (Yesterday an egg broke accidentaly on her back so we are thinking they were eating at it.) My best guess because it does not look like there was any kind of attack.

I put her in the slop sink, gave her a bath to clean the raw skin, dirt away etc... :aww
Confined her to a cage in the garage with plenty of food and clean water AND placed an antibiotic cream on her back to the raw skin.

What else can I do?
Is there something to stop her now from pecking at her own flesh???
(I saw her do this, while she was in the cage). I looked real close for any bugs and did not see any.

What else can I or should I put on her back, she looks like a Plucked chicken breast,

Poor thing!!!!

Thanks for any and all advice!!!!!! Will she be ok?

This AM it's JUST HER in the cage and SHE is pecking at her back!!!!!! WHY????
Could there be bugs and I don't see them????
Now what should I do???? some advice would be greatly appreciated. AND NO, I DO NOT HAVE ROOS.

Do you have a rooster? I have a few bare back ladies. They are the roo's favorite. Never had a problem with my 2 lb silkie roo... but his clumsy 9 lb replacement does a number on the feathers.

Silkie - I agree with you, sounds just like what a roo would do. DH told me today to go get chicken saddles. It would help in your case too CGRN. http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/showthread.php?t=181223

windy is right hey there tess the chicken saddles do work quite well soundss like you got a real fiesty roo on your hands. first aid wise you are doing well with the cooler weather I dont think you will have to deal with flies or ants but keep an eye on her anyway just to be carefull tommorow maybe try rinsing out the wounds with a saline solution and reaply the ointment. I would keep her confined as chickens like to pick at sores and wounds. Also bag balm seems to heal wounds rather well. I wouldnt put a saddle on her (or any type of bandage) till the wounds heal since infection will grow when they are covered good luck and keep us posted.

Simplicity - LOL.... Nope I have a over fiesty hen... she is such a hmmmm .... I have 3 of them.

I am going to start making the saddles probably on Sunday, got things I have to get done tomorrow.

hey tess thanks for that link also it is going to come in handy will just have to adjust it for size for my turkeys now if only I could learn to sew a straight line and I would be set.
