Hello all,
My rooster had an ear infection derived from mites in his ear. I have cleaned out the coop, sprayed/soaked with liquid Sevin Dust then dusted him with powder Sevin. I also sprinkled the whole coop with DE. The mites are gone but I am still going to treat again in 7 days. I put my rooster on Tylan antibiotics which cleared up the infection as far as I can tell. I did have to scrap out the dried up infection in his ear because he was shaking his head violently. The only way I can describe the infection was it was the consistency of a hard boiled yolk. Once I scraped all of the infection I could see out he yawned quite a bit and seemed to be better except for he is still shaking his violently but not as frequent. Also, since he has had the ear infection he hasn't been sleeping on his roost. He's sleeping on the lower step used to get to the higher roost. But while sleeping he turns his head completely upside down. I was hoping after cleaning out his ear he would be oriented again to be able to go on the roost. He's eating and drinking just fine. I have to wake him in the mornings and when I do I have to turn and hold his head right side up and after about 10 seconds he will jump up and shake his feathers and be fine for the rest of day until again its time to sleep. Could the infection be deeper in his ear canal where I can not reach to scrap out? I know when I have an ear infection I put hydrogen peroxide. Would this be safe for him and maybe help push out the remaining infection? I feel so horrible for him. He knows he's not 100% he hasn't crowed or had any interest in the hens since he's got the ear infection. Any one ever have this happen?
Thanks,
Carli
****3/25/11-UPDATE: So his ear infection is completely gone...woohoo! BUT his neck is staying upside down/crooked and the eye that is facing downwards is staying closed. I have opened the eye and there appears to be no injury or parasites. I've put Vetricin ointment in it just in case the infection that he had in his ear went to his eye. I've also tried massaging the muscles in his neck hoping it will loosen them up. He's eating and drinking just fine. All around he acts normal except for being slightly disoriented when first waking up or resting. He walks around with his head sort of straight but as soon as he rests it goes upside down next to his body. Looks like he's dead and it freaks me out. In the video he is the red on the right. I've had to put him in a cage now for his safety. We have a rooster that roams the property at free will and has never shown any interest in the coop until now. The two of them would bicker sometime through the fence but now the black rooster is flying into the coop and trying to literally kill Red Baron. I guess to take his women. I let him out of the cage in the mornings and when I get home at night so he can stretch and meet with his girls.
