I posted in hatching and haven't gotten much response, and figured all the brilliant duck people may have some words of wisdom.

We have a goose sitting on a nest of duck eggs. 3 have gotten to their "due date", one hatched over night 2 nights ago. Yesterday mama stepped on one and crushed it. I saw a bit of blood and the shell was destroyed so my immediate reaction was to bring it in the house. It is currently under a heat lamp, surrounded by moist towels, and with a thermometer and bacitracin on the membrane. I have read and reread Sally Sunshines assisting the hatch sticky and assisted 2 years ago with success. I just don't know if I should further intervene? The way the egg was crushed was so weird, the shell ripped away from the outer membrane and inner membrane, so you can directly see the duckling and inner membrane. Baby is still alive and fighting, but not much has happened in the 36 hours it's been in the house. The 3rd egg under goose has an external pip as of this morning. Don't want to give up on this baby!

I think the membrane may be sticky and its foot is on top of its head . How close to hatch does the veining disappear? there's been little change since yesterday with veining and i worry because there is basically just membrane at this point since the outer shell has broken away.

The veins disappear between the time of external pip and actual hatch. I wouldn't think the missing shell would affect that process since I believe the duckling basically absorbs them, but you would want to watch that the membrane doesn't dry up. You can mist it with lukewarm water. I realize your last comment was over a day ago though...any news?

Do not mist the membrane with water....water has the opposite effect and draws out moisture.....Vaseline or even cooking oil with keep it moist....You can try in tiny bits to peal back the membrane...Do not get crazy and start any more bleeds...Use a tweezer, and only if it looks dry.....

Update - baby is out. there is some yolk (a small amount) not absorbed and there is still a blood vessel attached. Should I cut that? Iodine? She isn't fluffy so I guess she was a bit sticky. I would like to put her out with Mama Goose and her 2 siblings but i feel I should wait. Will it be possible for her to join them?

Do not cut it off! If she isn't up and about yet and she's still in the incubator wrap her in a washcloth dampened with warm water. Any bird that has just hatched takes some time to get fluffy. Once she's fluffy and active stick her under mom at night

Thank you! She is getting a bit stronger and it separated from the membrane. Here's a pic of what is left:

Thank you so much! Not going according to plan, and of course we're heading out of the town this weekend!
