Updated mosquitoe information???

I'm right there with you. We are just outside Austin and live on a 40-100 acre pond (flooded so we are currently well over 100 acres of pond). I've got a broody hen and since she sits there for so long each day they just suck her dry! I must have shoo'ed off 20 skeeters just now! I have a fan in there but I'm going to try the fish in the rain barrels as well.

Oh, and just to add for those above the frost line, way down here we have a terrible mosquito problem that does cause fowl issues. This same hen had crusted over eyes two years ago due to mosquito-transmitted disease (MTDs). A friend came and shot her up with something from Tractor Supply and we set her apart from the others and she cleared up in a day or two.

I am glad to hear from you. I live down close to Houston and today we got another 10" to add to the already wet land. Mosquitoes down here are hungry and do cause problems for chickens.

So here I am after 2 huge storms and 21" of rain in two days, my yard looks like a swamp. I just ordered 4 containers of Bonide mosquito beater granules from Amazon. It has good reviews so I am willing to give it a try out of desperation for what it is to come. I have used the consentrated liquid diluted in water which pretty much is the same thing as the granules to spray around the chicken yard but at this point I don't need more water.

My coops have fans and I also have small boxes with cotton balls with essential oils.
I still see mosquitos around but not the hordes I am expecting. I only hope the product gets here soon enough before all those larvae turn into blood sucking monsters

I forgot to mentioned that since these are granules, I plan to spread them outside the chicken fence so the chickens cannot reach them and eat them. When I use the liquid solution, I spray the walls of the coops and around the run and I have had no problem with it. Once we dry again I will probably use both products to get the best results.

Let me know your results. I plan on ordering some next week when I get paid. I heard yall got a lot of rain. I live about 90miles east of you in Tomball and we are also flooded. Luckily no water standing where the chicken pens are but water definitely standing every where else. I really hope this stuff works.

I will certainly let you know the results, my 2 chicken yards are very well drained but the water is standing in some areas. Today I am sprinkling some granules of this product I have been using already in the areas where the water makes some pools

Also if you have electricity in your coop, it will be a good idea to put a fan in there, mosquitos don't like breeze and it will also move the air around to cool the coop since the heat has already started.

This is just a repellant, aromatic oils soaked into corn cobs......http://www.bonide.com/assets/Products/Labels/l5611.pdf.....
....it will dissipate pretty quickly with sun, wind, and rain and doesn't do much good if there is a breeze as the aromatics blow away.

This can work good to kill larvae in long term standing water, but I think it will die(it's a specific bacteria) off once water dries up,maybe about the same time the larvae dies.

Thank you Aart, it is a very good observation. We normally have a pretty good breeze where we are, thank goodness, and it helps with the mosquitos and the heat. Regarding the aromatic bits I am thinking about placing them in containers inside the run close to the coops on top of the rafters in the ceiling where the breeze, the sun and rain can't get and maybe they will last longer. I am discarding the idea of spreading them outside the perimeter of the chicken fence like I had originally planned thanks to you. The aromatic oils I have in small containers in the coops have to be renewed every 3 or 4 days because they dry out.



As far as the Bt bits, I think it is a good product. Right now I have standing water pretty much everywhere so it will help with the larvae until it dries (hopefully we are done with the storms). Sun is out and doing its job of drying. How long is it for larvae to turn into a blood sucking beasts? I read the mosquito life cycle some time ago, I need to read it again but my recollection is that it is not that many days 4 or 5 days???
