I'm right there with you. We are just outside Austin and live on a 40-100 acre pond (flooded so we are currently well over 100 acres of pond). I've got a broody hen and since she sits there for so long each day they just suck her dry! I must have shoo'ed off 20 skeeters just now! I have a fan in there but I'm going to try the fish in the rain barrels as well.
Oh, and just to add for those above the frost line, way down here we have a terrible mosquito problem that does cause fowl issues. This same hen had crusted over eyes two years ago due to mosquito-transmitted disease (MTDs). A friend came and shot her up with something from Tractor Supply and we set her apart from the others and she cleared up in a day or two.
